in reply to Jake in the desert • • •The thing that always comes to mind is that I really liked playing in a band. But I really liked playing in a certain band. 😅
We used to meet every Friday for band practice and just go through all the songs, maybe try something new? I think we were on stage maybe 5 times in almost 10 years? 😅
A few years ago I had the chance to join another band, but they were way more ambitious. At least one concert a month, Germany-wide tours, maybe the neighbouring countries too.
I was immediately discouraged, because I felt like I was not good enough. I practiced every evening for a full week, but quickly realized that I didn't want to spend 100% of my free time chasing this one hobby. I quit the band before I even met the other members face to face.

But you're forced to lay everything bare, any little bit of money you have, everything you own. You need to explain everything you do, fill out forms if you want to buy clothes or rent a bigger apartment. They are adamant that nobody "cheats", but ultimately you can barely scrape by with the money you get. And of course you're forced to report to the "work agency" regularly and need confirmation that you applied for jobs, need to explain why maybe they didn't want to take you on.
It's not a good system. Death by bureaucracy. I think we Germans are good at that. 😩
I still dream of the utopia where people can just live and any work that needs to be done resolves itself, because people step up when needed. I want to believe that such a world could work. But it needs to be a world without money and full of empathy. I have no idea how to get there.... show more
