This movie was written & directed by Stephen King. I remember watching it several times in the 90s because they'd play it on TBS. However, I watched the first 5 minutes yesterday, and it's clear TBS edited a lot of it for content, so this is going to be a brand new viewing for me.

I mentioned watching this on TBS multiple times. Growing up around Atlanta, I have several friends who work for Turner (now Time Warner, or whatever they call themselves these days).
So, the story goes that, in the 80s & 90s, since Ted Turner lived basically on the same property as the broadcast station (if you’re from Atlanta, you probably know exactly where I’m talking about—the “mansion” on the hill), he’d get up early on Saturday mornings and…
…walk down to the station in his bathrobe, coffee in hand, and tell the folks at the controls whatever movie he’d want to watch. Often, it was a Clint Eastwood movie, but sometimes, it was Maximum Overdrive or other such fare. So, they’d preempt whatever programming they had scheduled and play that for Ted.
This explains why TBS aired so many of the same kinds of movies on Saturday mornings during that era.

I'm not an expert, but I don't think diesel engines (without even turbo chargers or anything!) aren't exactly optimal for chasing cars.
