🧵(1) This pod was fascinating. The learning I took away: the prohibitively high costs of nice things in the US, like great transit, are not metaphysical necessities! They come from choices that are optional & changeable. It turns out there are MANY policy levers that could lower costs dramatically.

I'm currently on a year long waiting list to speak to a surgeon about getting a hysterectomy, because even though my gynaecologist agrees that it would be the best option for my debilitating periods, every time she sends a referral the surgeons say no.
Even though I'm over 40.
Even though my husband agrees.
Even though birth control is bad for both my mental and physical health.
Even though I first asked for one TWENTY years ago and haven't changed my mind.
Infuriating.
