Just watched Kevin Bridges bit on "having an empty" (from about 4m30s). You're maybe 17, your parents are away, you think you're having a party but the party is having you.
To be fair, my schoolfriends were generally cool. David jumped off the back stairs and ended up wearing the remains of the picnic table as a skirt, Chris fell down the stairs with a full pint of beer without spilling a drop, and the police turned up "just to check" and left happy.

Mastodon Migration

Kind of feel like it was the timing of things. The first wave migration in 2022 was very rapid, and people wanted to pick right up with what they were doing on Twitter. Of course, that didn't happen, and the community here was also resistant to change. Feelings were heightened, and folks were easily annoyed. Certainly they are coping with trolls on Bluesky now, but they have had time to adapt to the change so the feelings aren't as acute.

In short, Bluesky is kind of the beneficiary if what the call "second mover" advantage.

Feel like it is a lot better now, but yes, that is why they left.
Casual Observer
in reply to Joe • • •@not2b It would be near impossible for a federated system (with no central overlord/moderation) to centrally address harassers or people that simply have a different opinion. I'm guessing that is why many of the folks I want in the fedi either have left or won't come here in the first place.
The downside (from my perspective) is that going to Bluesky/Threads/X/whatever with centralized moderation eliminates the tails (think normal distribution) of normal-joe opinion. Sure, the trolls are minimized, but so are the brilliant posters that have interesting things to say. So while emptywheel, popehat, George Conway, acyn, and other interesting (to me) posters can be less affected by trolls, they are stuck on a specific platform with more normalized and homogenized groupthink tendencies.
It's a choice that I am sad to see many make to avoid harassment.

In the early days of the Twitter migration there was quite a bit of scolding of people who came here about CWs and ALT text. Some people reacted badly to this and left Mastodon. It is much less an issue now, but those folks are gone. Most are on Bluesky now. Some on Threads.

in reply to Mastodon Migration • • •Is that why she left? Or was it because she missed the bots that inflated her "reach"?
I personally think Wheeler's overrated and too often misses the forest for the trees, so I did not notice her absence.

Hmmmm... Don't share that opinion concerning her work. It is indeed detail focused, but there is a lot of value in connecting the dots. In any case, you may be correct that a gross reduction in numbers was disheartening for popular posters like her, and that may have had something to do with them departing. Things were very chaotic and people wanted to just pick up here with the same experience as they had on Twitter. When that didn't happen there was considerable frustration.

Also, to be fair, Mastodon was not as technically advanced as it is now. Server overloads were fairly common, features were missing. Things are way way better now.

in reply to Mastodon Migration • • •Another good argument, also not remotely suggesting "we drove her off."
I really have no idea why you'd make such an absurd claim other than to paint her a victim and badmouth your fellow travelers here.

Sorry you feel this way. Said it because that's what happened IMO. Huge advocate of Mastodon, and big booster of the people here. It is truly a remarkable place. But, that doesn't mean it is without issues. One of them, which has greatly improved though still an issue, is thread jacking and scolding. We can both celebrate Mastodon and be frank about things that still need more work.

Personal note. Also mentioned both her and Ken White today, because of frustration. Just seeing their clever posts brought to mind hopes for public social media that have been to some degree sidetracked by Bluesky. Have a lot of confidence that decentralized open public networks are the future, but it is sad that the moment of opportunity occasioned by the Twitter collapse didn't materialize as it seemed possible at the time. So we keep at it.

Thanks for that. To be honest it does take time. The Fedi was not ready technically or socially for explosive growth back in 2022, and probably isn't today. But what we are building step by step is substantial and solid and will stand the test of time. Onward.

Think it was probably both. Know she was very frustrated by the constant hectoring.
The good thing is that there is much less of this scolding now. Feel like Mastodon is much better able to assimilate folks now, and the technology is really great, particularly editing, longer post length, and now quote posts.
And, of course, real, not phony decentralization.
