i read it with my jaw progressively nearing the floor.
so much, so very much, is wrong here, but this bit truly enraged me, that labor is still daring to trot out this LIE:
The government says it can't sustain the budget with our aging population, which is why the "user pays" system is entirely fair
- aukus
- fossilfool subsidies
- fossilfool tax breaks
- housing CGT + NG shitfuckery

in reply to Sara • • •I just got off a call about this. There's some NW Natural infrastructure nearby, but it's not impacted... Yet. I guess the County is a bit miffed that no one agency can 'take care of this'. I told our directors that FEMA won't get involved and ODOT probably won't fix the road until next fall, or later. They can apply for an ER, but that's complicated and would need a emergency declaration from the Governor.
They can't really do anything to stabilize an active slide of this size. We can only mitigate impacts and message other land management agencies. The land that the slide originated on is Weyerhauser land.

in reply to Cadmus š² • • •That happened right here, correct? You can see some sliding happen in this 2025 Google image, in the upper-right quadrant of this image.

in reply to Cadmus š² • • •@camless @ColesStreetPothole I'm curious what the LiDAR looks like in that vicinity
having seen the LiDAR for Oso, I really can't believe that was logging-related, despite how the lawsuit turned out
this one, idk, I am curious to learn more

in reply to KayJanes • • •@KayJanes yeah, really hard to say
logging certainly can trigger slides, but the stand in there looks pretty good-sized (albeit a traditional Weyco monoculture) so idk
Oregon forestry rules around landslides could use a lil reinforcement, I think...like most private lands forestry in the PNW...but without seeing some review from landslide geologists I don't want to pre-judge

in reply to Sara • • •My N was a forester in the PNW before retirement. We happened to live on the coast to the north and were living there when the big Garibaldi landslide happened.
Sara
in reply to KayJanes • • •@KayJanes yeah, my field time in WA with geos makes me think that sometimes hills just fall down and it's not really within human control
the part we can control is whether and how we build infrastructure in vulnerable places
I looked at a house here where the backyard was a headscarp -- "great views" -- sloping floors! -- no thanks!

in reply to Sara • • •We live on a hillside with a ton of springs. A builder came in within the past of couple of years to put houses up on an old tree farm and has discovered that it's a bit .... complicated.
