If you're going to measure economic growth & insist on GDP as your metric, then GDP per capita is the way to go.
As Richard Jones sets out, on that measure the UK has been in some trouble since the the start of the Tory years, but this also merely compounded problems stemming among other things from an earlier investment drought & the distortions of North Sea Oil.
Rather than managed de-growth (which many here advocate) this is chaotic impoverishment.
I would prefer to use VAT. It doesn’t capture everything but it excludes mortgages and financial jiggery-pokery.
Over the piece it would give a far more accurate picture of actual economic activity.
Not housing bubbles.
You might have the modern inverse of “endogenous growth theory” there.
