I get the whole "chaos is opportunity" idea, but it's more than a bit unsettling to think about something 45/47 did being beneficial to the downtrodden.

Also, maybe I've seen "enshittocene" before, but it really made me laugh - bravo. Also spot on.

My favorite quote from that Lilly Tomlin skit was, "We serve all kinds of people, from presidents and kings to the scum of the earth", but your quote is more pertinent.

Sorry - one more reply. Is there a source for the comment on Google's internal emails loving the deteriorating search quality because it means more ad exposure?

"Abolish the Canadian laws that protect US Big Tech companies from Canadian competition. Make it legal to reverse-engineer, jailbreak and modify American technology products and services. Don't ask Facebook to pay a link tax to Canadian newspapers, make it legal to jailbreak all of Meta's apps and block all the ads in them, so Mark Zuckerberg doesn't make a dime off of us."

This should be our goal everywhere.

oh man, this is bleak:

"Before Shiftkey offers a nurse a shift, it purchases that worker's credit history from a data-broker. Specifically, it pays to find out how much credit-card debt the nurse is carrying, and whether it is overdue.

The more desperate the nurse's financial straits are, the lower the wage on offer. Because the more desperate you are, the less you'll accept to come and do the gruntwork of caring for the sick, the elderly, and the dying."

@cstross

> My colleague Charlie Stross calls corporations "slow AI.”

I read that slow AI article many years ago and have looked for it ever since (forgetting who the author was) and it's been absolutely impossible to search for the word "corporation" and "AI" together and get anything useful since 2023 or so.

oh, seeing how doctorow and schneier both quoted stross about this recently, I assumed he'd come up with it before me, but... it looks like I may have, erhm, priority? 🙂

five minutes into the 2016 LibrePlanet speech, I stated that I had realized the year before that the notion of corporations had already materialized the singularity that we so often feared. indeed, that was the realization around which I built that entire speech 😉

in 2019 I came across another writer who had also figured that out, publishing it at just about the same time as stross

it was an idea whose time had come. that's so cool!

Hey, I was in the middle of watching this video, surfed away for a few minutes, & then came back, & now Vimeo is demanding I "sign in" to watch it:
