I would describe this new feature on mastodon.social as being somewhere between "silly" and "bad".

Eww.

Featured by whom? For why?

The whole reason I'm here is because there's _nothing_ featured.

Whomever it is that wants these rat-race, competition-ridden features can go back to commercial social media forthwith and right quick.

We don't want any.

@401matthall the Featured tab on my instance is just posts I've pinned, not anything nefarious, just what I chose. @mcc, which aspect is concerning in the screenshot to make sure I'm on the same page?

I have filed a Github issue about this new feature. Because I suspect "this sucks, you should remove it" would not get a good response, I have tried to limit myself to "constructive criticism".

It simply moves "pins" to "Featured", and now lists the most recent posts and boosts at the top of the default "Posts" profile page. Not sure what to think about it. Why do you dislike it?
in reply to Mastodon Migration

[Edited: I did indeed overlook something: this feature is on the profile page, not on the hone page. My bad.]

maybe I'm overlooking something, but from what I see, the "featured" tab would be the thing that is opened by default when I open the mastodom home page?

Sorry, no matter what's on it, it's simply not Important enough to replace the "posts" tab that currently has this position.

@danielaKay
Hmmmm... just tried clicking on your account name, and it brings up your profile page with the Posts tab selected.
in reply to Mastodon Migration

@mastodonmigration @danielaKay So if you look at Eugen's masto feed you discover the point of the "featured" page is to contain your pinned posts. Those are the ones you *want* to elevate over other posts. Starting there makes sense. Elevating the pinned posts makes sense in a way the featured hashtags don't.

But it doesn't make sense? Because you have to click a button to see it? Really what this is doing is *demoting* pinned posts…

in reply to mcc

@danielaKay

Yeah, that makes sense. On the other hand it is sort of a pain to wade through a users pins every time you access their profile page.

Feel like your point is stronger, but see both sides. If they are going to keep it this way however don't think they should limit "Featured" aka pins to 5 posts.

in reply to Mastodon Migration

@mastodonmigration @danielaKay I think that

1. To me, putting the pinned tweets under pins AND defaulting to pins would make the most sense.

2. If it were my site I'd name it "pins" instead of "featured".

3. There shouldn't be a featured/pinned tab if there are no featured hashtags or pinned posts!

But also I do think it would be best if they just removed it

@AnneOfGreenCables @401matthall The team that runs mastodon.social uses mastodon.social as a sort of "staging server" where they test in production the current github top-of-tree. Often, this leads to unusual or incomplete UI.
in reply to mcc

I saw this when I viewed a random mastodon.social user’s profile. The total lack of explanation of what it means is what gets me.
