As I understand it, the situation at hand here is, bus go fast or bus go boom, it's --

#1994, or #32, 1994's "Speed."

#32 #1994
in reply to Alex Daily!

if bus go fast or bus go boom /here/, the strat would be, like, shut down the Ringweg, let it just do laps over there

but could you get the city to shut down the Ringweg in time? or would bureaucracy get in the way?

this thing rules -- the staff and guests of a 100-year old inn in a small Japanese village get stuck in a 2-minute time loop together -- with just two minutes to work with, how do you get out of the loop while maintaining service at an inn that resets every 120 seconds?

(also every loop is a one-shot)

#1999 #37
in reply to Alex Daily!

A solid little "cheating on exams as heist movie" drama -- I don't think I've ever seen a more dramatically delivered exam sequence?

Apparently the original Thai film ends with a very strong "cheating is bad" moral, but I think this one threads the needle between "getting away with it" and "real consequences" very well.

in reply to Alex Daily!

This one truly has no interest in the 1897 stuff at all, it's the Demeter, one establishing shot, one dark alley, smash cut to London 2000. The Moffat miniseries played the same turn as a twist.

#40, or #2002, 2002's "Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones."

#40 #2002
in reply to Alex Daily!

My hot Episode I take is I think it's excellent, I totally get what George is trying to do, and I think he's largely successful at it, even if the pod race could be a little shorter.

Episode I's biggest issues are the things George does without really thinking them through, like importing old racist adventure story tropes uncritically.

in reply to Alex Daily!

Several *thousand* solar systems are leaving the Republic? Looking around the Galactic Senate, like, uh, guys, is that good?
in reply to Alex Daily!

Here's another hot take: If Star Wars shouldn't, as some people insist post-prequels, focus so much on the politics of its setting, then why is "Andor" the best Star Wars there's ever been? The politics are not the problem.

Attack of the Clones is my favorite of the prequel movies. I know people get hung up on the goofier aspects of the romance, sand, etc., but to me this is overall a pretty solid sci-fi action adventure, and the Obi-Wan/Anakin stuff early on whizzing through Coruscant on a high-speed chase in the air is genuinely exciting!
in reply to Jared White (ResistanceNet ✊)

@jaredwhite Oh, the sci-fi action stuff is terrific, with the exception of maybe the Geonosis sequence, the vast majority of it is magnificent, as good as it gets.

I understand that this is a beloved holiday classic in its country of origin, but my primary exposure to this tale is through parodies of its basic beats -- things like Don Rosa's "The Duck Who Never Was."

A direct sequel to "Inside Llewyn Davis" about another guy you've never heard of, leaving now to go see --

#42, or #2004, 2025's "A Complete Unknown."

#2004 #42
in reply to Alex Daily!

Less a Bob Dylan biopic and more a movie about Hurricane Dylan wiping out the 1960s New York folk scene. A hurricane doesn't care about what you want, it can't know what you want -- it's just gonna do it's own thing and it's up to you whether you evacuate.

Thought it was surprisingly unflattering, surprisingly unsanitised -- he's constantly a real asshole, especially to Joan Baez -- but I also didn't know that much about Bob Dylan, so I assume all of the jackassery is established lore.

in reply to Alex Daily!

🎸 #42: "A Complete Unknown" (2025), third act

Sensitive content

in reply to Alex Daily!

Chalamet really solid, but it's Norton as Pete Seeger who really stands out to me here -- where Dylan is a black box, Seeger has to wear it all on the ol' sleeves, and Norton does it beautifully.

(Second movie I've watched in less than a week where somebody is Judas at the end.)

(I did not win trivia this time.)

in reply to Alex Daily!

That's interesting. I watched the Robbie Williams biopic last night, so another musical bio thing, and that portrayed Robbie as an asshole as well. And Robbie is involved since he actually narrates it so he was clearly okay with it.
in reply to Santa Sponge Has Moved🏳️‍🌈⛄⛄

@retrosponge They let Dylan take a pass on the script on this one, and his only note was to ask them to give his girlfriend at the time a fictional name.

They both seem like they don't mind an accurate depiction.

in reply to Alex Daily!

That's awesome. I'm glad we're getting some decent music-related bio-pics. Frankly, Bohemian Rhapsody scarred me for life.

I really wish they'd turned Phil Collins' autobiography into a movie. It would be fantastic.

in reply to Santa Sponge Has Moved🏳️‍🌈⛄⛄

@retrosponge Obviously "Bohemian Rhapsody" is awful, but I gotta hand it to 'em, Malek as Freddie at Live Aid? Felt like magic to me. Like they'd resurrected him.
in reply to Alex Daily!

Yeah, it's such a shame because he did an absolutely incredible job. Just the movie was total garbage.

I've been a fan of Queen since the title song came out originally in the 70s and there is just so much wrong with that movie.

I've heard the Elton John one is really good, but I've not seen it.

I watched Better Man last night, the Robbie Williams one, and I think I've probably seen my favourite movie of the year already.

in reply to Alex Daily!

I was going to say how much I'd love to see your comments as a pull quote on a poster.

Decided screw it, I'd download a graphics program and make it happen.

Flourishes in the little character moments, though you wish there were more, and the action is very watchable. Watching a big dumb guy beat up the White House will pretty much always be enjoyable.

Obviously the Richard Gere character is an evil capitalist and his relationship with Julia Roberts is profoundly poorly balanced; what does this look like a year from now? Leaving him would mean leaving the whole lifestyle, yikes!

Kicks ass. "Final Destination"-style violence and gore but make it slapstick. Extremely good, heightened execution of a great little premise. And at 98 minutes, doesn't outstay its welcome.

Was worried this would have the problems the other Perkins films do, where he clearly has a thing he's going for visually but isn't quite in control of the story, but no, this is his first Actually Good one.

(They should let Tatiana Maslany be this fucking funny in everything.)

I watched the two 50th anniversary specials and the first episode, it's Saturday right now, I should probably watch --

The movie that dares to ask, what if there was a /second/ man named Shaft, it's --

#55, or #2017, 2000 John Singleton picture "Shaft."

(I'm skipping the original two Shaftquels, because I don't think they're in continuity here, and also, they-- they look like they're probably not very good.)
in reply to Alex Daily!

As I understand it, Sam Jackson plays Second Shaft, nephew of First Shaft, though in the third film he's the son of First Shaft and the dad of Third Shaft.

New thing the cinema is doing -- "Mystery Classic" screenings. It's like Sneak Preview, but instead of a surprise movie that isn't out yet, it's a surprise movie that came out years ago.

This is much harder to file a guess for, but they've given a hint: "Happy 30th. Or 31st." We've interpreted this as, it's a 1994 movie that came out here in 1995.

Of the handful of plausible options, we've decided we'd quite like it to be "The Shawshank Redemption." But who knows!

Leaving now. #57, or #2019.

#2019 #57
in reply to Alex Daily!

It was not "Shawshank," it was "Pulp Fiction," and, ehhhhh, I'm just not a big Tarantino person.
in reply to Alex Daily!

Part of it, and that's me setting aside how inseparable his career is from Harvey Weinstein's, is that the things Mr Tarantino finds cool and interesting are largely things I find unappealing.

Part of it is that so much of it is loser try-hard shit, like Mr Tarantino's dialogue, like Mr Tarantino's long shots on a person's face, like all the violence.

I don't like how Mr Tarantino treats his women characters. It all feels *bad*.

in reply to Alex Daily!

And 23:30 is really too late to pick all that apart, but, like, the most confident, bold non-linear narrative can't change the fact that it's all unappealing loser try-hard shit to me.

Like, god, man, we fucking get it.

in reply to Alex Daily!

Let it be known that if Mr Tarantino has no more haters, I'm fucking dead.

god, is the only reason I think Reservoir Dogs is the only one of his films that still holds up, is it because it has no female characters
in reply to 🇹 Ti

@The_T Yeah, that would make one of these a lot easier to swallow.
in reply to Alex Daily!

I think it also helps that it's his first film so it was before he had time to get a lot more pretentious
in reply to 🇹 Ti

@The_T Even just in "Pulp," his second, he's so high on his own bullshit.
in reply to Alex Daily!

@The_T And I get why this all feels great and new and fresh in 1994, but all it's done with age is sour.
in reply to Alex Daily!

Went "what's the most 2020-ass movie I haven't seen yet," so, it's --

#58, or #2020, 2020's "Promising Young Woman."

#2020 #58
in reply to Alex Daily!

I'd have done the syncing up the big number with the movie's year thing more but that's not really compatible with working through all my lists, seeing current releases in the cinema, etcetera.
in reply to Alex Daily!

Anyway, "Promising Young Woman," I was on the cinema subscription when this came out, and vaguely wanted to see it, but by the time it actually played here the general opinion had shifted from "yes," to "nope."

in reply to Alex Daily!

"Wait a second. This feels too easy." - Ant-Man at the end of Quantumania.
in reply to 🇹 Ti

@The_T it's the prologue of the Kang arc, he can't be definitively defeated this early, he has to win much, much bigger first
in reply to 🇹 Ti

@The_T I want them to, too, but it's not happening. At least not this phase or the next.
in reply to Alex Daily!

🤷 there's been talks about it, some actors have said they were asked but the actor said no.
in reply to 🇹 Ti

@The_T Eh, that doesn't mean anything, it's Disney, they look into every option at least at a "having internal conversations about it" level. Really feels like they've fully changed focus to Doom.
in reply to Alex Daily!

Doom's gotta kill someone to show how serious he is!! And why wouldn't it be Kang!!
in reply to 🇹 Ti

look, if the whole point of recasting him is just to kill him off, I get why Colman Domingo said "yeah nah."

The biggest movie from 2022 I haven't seen yet, it's --

#60, or #2022, 2022's "Fire Island."

Singing over the Searchlight Pictures 20th Century Fox music is the kind of thing that will always work for me.
in reply to Alex Daily!

I skipped this in 2022 because I'm: Scared of not getting on with the queer media Everyone Loves, because Then What Does That Make Me, an anxiety that I realise is nonsense but that doesn't stop me feeling it, hey-ho, hey-ho.
in reply to Alex Daily!

(This is also a big part of why I haven't seen "I Saw the TV Glow" or "The People's Joker.")

(Though another part of those is I thought Jane Schoenbrun's previous film was so far up its own ass it came out the nose and Vera Drew is from that Tim & Eric zone that I also just never get on with.)

#MovieThread VI: The Past Is An Undiscovered Country, Chapter Three — March Edition

From 2020 to 2024 I watched 1962 movies.
In 2025 so far I've watched another 60, for a total of 2022 movies.

* 30 per month feels neat, but I also feel like I gotta pick up Da Pace.
* Have been mostly focused on podcast movies.

Wow that is a lot of movies. Do you have any recommendation for a comedy movie that you particularly liked that is fresh in your memory? No need to rack your brain too hard.
in reply to 𝖑𝖔𝖆𝖙𝖍𝖘𝖔𝖒𝖊🔻𝖉𝖔𝖓𝖌𝖊𝖆𝖙𝖊𝖗

@loathsome_dongeater I thought "Thelma" from last year was really great! Low stakes, clearly defined characters, gets a lot out of just putting June Squibb into Situations.

If you want something a little sillier, a little broader, 2023's road trip through Asia flick "Joy Ride" is a hoot, or if you want more of a drama where, like, the characters are funny because life is just funny like that, but also you'll cry at the end, check out Thai film "How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies."

in reply to 𝖑𝖔𝖆𝖙𝖍𝖘𝖔𝖒𝖊🔻𝖉𝖔𝖓𝖌𝖊𝖆𝖙𝖊𝖗

@loathsome_dongeater Just looked at what comedies I'd given five stars on my Letterboxd in the past few years and a few immediately jumped out as ones I still think about. If you watch any of those, I hope you enjoy them like I did. :)
