#MovieThread VI: The Past Is An Undiscovered Country, Chapter Two — February Edition
From 2020 to 2024 I watched 1962 movies.
In January 2025 I watched another 31, for a total of 1993 movies.
* Watchlist going terribly -- I've added more than I've watched.
* But we podcast movie and Best Picture nominee ever onwards.

#1994, or #32, 1994's "Speed."

in reply to Alex Daily! • • •if bus go fast or bus go boom /here/, the strat would be, like, shut down the Ringweg, let it just do laps over there
but could you get the city to shut down the Ringweg in time? or would bureaucracy get in the way?

Totally get what this is trying to do -- it's trying to make the basic idea of it scary again, it's boiling it down back to basics.
But you can get "what if a man was a wolf" pretty much anywhere these days, what this needed wasn't boiling down, but the exact kind of escalation and reinvention that you, well, that you hire the 2020's "Invisible Man" guy for.

If Tatooine was familiar territory to start back up in, chasing an assassin around cyberpunk-noir Coruscant is something totally new for Star Wars at this point, there's nothing like it in the original trilogy.

So why doesn't it quite work? Part of it is that we're used to seeing the Jedi as something heroic, a force (ahem) for Good. We think of Old-Man Obi-Wan and Luke, we think of them taking down Darth Vader.
Even just in these, the idea that they're an instrument of Palpatine's dark Bush-era agenda is a slow burn, background radiation, and we're constantly with Anakin and Obi-Wan, always trying to, officially, Do Good.

Shmi lets go because she got to see her son alive and thriving, a hero, somebody who has, beyond all hope, ascended from the life she was able to give him. What little she had is more than ever.
Padmé lets go because everything she cared about is gone, dead, destroyed. Even if she lives, she'd, what, have to hide, with her kids? A life beyond heartbreak would be hell. Everything she had is less.
It's like poetry, it rhymes.

George knows what he's working with, what it's capable of, and it's all always in service of presenting a big vibrant colourful sci-fi world that's always gonna be a little goofy at heart

Last time, I gave this three stars on Letterboxd.
But this time I honestly think all of this is great. The relationship is a series of mismatches running into and tripping over each other, and I don't think Anakin's arc, or the idea of the Jedi being a flawed system, really get sold as well as they should have been.
But I also think George, working with what he has, when he has it? Turns in the best version of this he can.
Five stars.

Despite the systems he exists in and around being explicitly situated against him -- the cops are racist, the crime families think he's too close to the cops -- John Shaft moves through the world like a hot knife through butter. The world is his, he makes the rules. The butter better get out of the way.
And Richard Roundtree, in 1971 clearly the hottest man alive, really sells it. The weight of the world isn't on his shoulders, it's under his feet.

Easy to dismiss in all the ways I did earlier, to call it "exclusively referential," and "absolutely incomprehensible if you're unfamiliar with the first episode of SNL" or perhaps "a manic hat drifting on a shallow pool."
You could easily make fun of the way it tells you you're watching the unfolding of a seismic televisual event that nobody at the time believed in approximately, having now counted, 463,000 times.
And honestly, you'd be right to.

Much stronger in the clarity of its message -- so actively dealing with anti-semitism not just in how the Nazis were anti-semitic but in the ways seemingly normal, good people back at home can be full of hate is /still/ rare -- than in its ability to deliver much of a noir crime thriller.
The picture's tendencies towards long, wordy conversations gets stale by the end.

This is much harder to file a guess for, but they've given a hint: "Happy 30th. Or 31st." We've interpreted this as, it's a 1994 movie that came out here in 1995.
Of the handful of plausible options, we've decided we'd quite like it to be "The Shawshank Redemption." But who knows!
Leaving now. #57, or #2019.

Part of it is that so much of it is loser try-hard shit, like Mr Tarantino's dialogue, like Mr Tarantino's long shots on a person's face, like all the violence.
I don't like how Mr Tarantino treats his women characters. It all feels *bad*.
Alex Daily!

If you want something a little sillier, a little broader, 2023's road trip through Asia flick "Joy Ride" is a hoot, or if you want more of a drama where, like, the characters are funny because life is just funny like that, but also you'll cry at the end, check out Thai film "How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies."
