you can note your rental phone number, cancel you Airbnb reservation, and book with the rental directly.
in reply to It's Soooo 4D

@so4D only downside I see if loss of protection for both host and guest :(
in reply to Simon

@so4D @staustellsimon This is a real issue. But I try to go for places that have really high ratings. Unfortunately it excludes new listings. I imagine hosts can do the same if the renter’s rating is visible. Is that not the case?
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

the two guests I’ve had serious troubles from, both had high ratings and still do, despite some questionable reviews. Really odd. We’re encouraged to use Instant Book, that has some protection should we not like the reviews etc

More detail: a great amount of this guy’s wealth is due to the fact that he owns A LOT of Airbnb company shares. I didn’t check to see how closely he is affiliated with the company but reducing Airbnb stock prices is a direct hit to his wealth.
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

Airbnb was ALWAYS unethical. Well, initially, it was supposed to be people renting their homes while they travelled, to subsidize their travel. Once people started buying houses to rent short-term, they became evil.
in reply to Carolyn

@CStamp yeah people choose their own red lines - this was one step too far for me. I appreciate that others are able to hold a different more strict line.
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

Does anyone know if there's a list somewhere of popular companies (tech or not) showing reasons why we should boycott them?

@mathcolorstrees: co-founder doesn't mean he still benefits from the business, but it looks like he's still on the Board of Directors and still holds a lot of shares in the company. He's also on the Board of Tesla.
in reply to Richard K

@RichSPK yes, added context here. But also thanks for the added info about being on the board of directors.

Todays πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„ moment. Cancelled my AirBNB account in 2019 so at least that is something I don’t have to do.
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

I already despised AirBnB for helping make most of the cities I've lived in unlivable. This is really the cherry on top
in reply to nick

@nick23 I haven’t looked into them@much but there is VRBO and Booking.com I think
@nick
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

I've been a heavy ABnB user, but luckily my next is with Booking.com. They are not an identical service -- weighted more towards hotels -- but there is definitely overlap.Regardless, I'm gonna dump ABnB now. Thanks for spreading the word.

@tbn97 I once used booking.com. An hr after I booked a place I wanted, I got an email from them that the booking could not be honoured, so book here instead. I booked somewhere else. The night I was due to check in, I received a phone call from the place I had initially booked, asking if we needed directions. I had to tell her we had already checked in someone else, gave her all the emails. I will never use them again. @mathcolorstrees @nick23

Airbnb and short term rentals (STR) have taken huge numbers of dwellings and turned them into distributed hotels located in residential areas. In some cases, the conversions exceed the ability of the community to build new housing. Elected leaders interested in creating housing and ending the unhoused crisis should take note.
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

@hypebot Super. Airbnb-Boykott! Dann gibt es in Berlin wieder mehr freie Wohnungen.
Und in anderen GroßstÀdten weltweit.
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

Why did it have to come to this. Proud to say I've seen ot coming and never did ΓΌber and stop using airbnb 8 years ago.
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

TFA indicates he's not ideologically rigid. He's coming after OSHA and FEMA because they're his regulators.

Lobbyists have to be crapping themselves. They depend on regulated company -> lobbyist -> Congress -> regulatory agency. Now the CEOs are just being put directly in charge of personnel of their own agency

in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

πŸ‘‰Fun fact:

Gebbia's father used to be on our city council and we banned #airbnb rentals in much of the city.

I mean really if you play your cards right you can use a dating app purely platonically as a way of finding a place to stay in any town
in reply to Noodlemaz

wow what a prick
I'm also not American, rando who has now blocked me/us.
So fragile.
in reply to Noodlemaz

@noodlemaz
And hear this Nazi is calling names again of course I blocked you started by calling names jumping in the Kool-Aid without knowing the flavor

And if I AM fragile that means that, what, you're better than me?

Shove that bitterness up your anal retentiveness and

Go

FUCK
Yourself

Yourself you cipher

in reply to Eli Wallach's favorite Bass

@noodlemaz @voxofgod can you please remove or modify posts where you call someone a Nazi? I worry that it’s losing its meaning and that’s important when there are actual fascists or Nazis popping up more.
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

@noodlemaz @voxofgod oh never mind you have posted that Harris was a fascist. Which means you don’t understand the difference. Ok well I guess this is goodbye.
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

indeed I am a man

But to do this you're going to be able to screen out freaks pretty easily

If they don't give you their name and number, You can meet them in a neutral place You can do internet searches on who they are, block if not safe.

I've gotten people to translate for me for a surgery before this way, I've found tour guides and places to sleep all of which were not sexual.

I'm not saying it's perfect, but if you're looking for a way to boycott Airbnb this is one

in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

I mean, anyone who is going to be doing dating apps has a level of this risk regardless, and I would assume that the risk could be mitigated by looking for women rather than men.

It is more of a boarding situation than Airbnb, and I grant that w/my white male privilege, it is fewer steps, I just have several different things that I do that aren't conventional because for those things aren't available to someone as poor as I am

The unconventional can be used for boycotts, too

in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

We've been working on banning short-term rentals in our HOA... But there are a few "corporate owners" who are balking at the idea...of course.
in reply to Democracy Dies in Dumbass

@ShredderFeeder I’m not doing this because I oppose short term rentals. I don’t know enough to have a nuanced opinion on the topic.

I’m doing it because I don’t want to help someone who supports blatant fascism. That’s more clear cut to me.

in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

oh I get it and that's also a very good reason to oppose short term rentals.

Just saying there are many more.

in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

fwiw Joe financially supported and donated his time to the past three democratic presidential campaigns.
in reply to mtillman

@mtillman πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ he should know better than to help someone who gives a fascist salute on national tv in front of the whole world then
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

Just deleted mine too. I had never used it, and had been considering it now that I have time now I'm retired. Glad to be rid of it.
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

Gave up on AirBnB some years back after crappy experiences and the disruption they are causing communities.
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

I wonder also, if lots of Canadians will make airbnb reservations in the #americanfascism land, for 3 4 or 5 months from now, and then just cancel them in a few weeks or months. Whenever it's okay to cancel?
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

I was already shunning #Airbnb for their outrageous and disingenuous response to #overtourism in #shorttermrentals and resulting housing crises in many cities and islands around the world - "the local governments should just build more housing". As if Airbnb wouldn't soak up any of the new housing, too. Any such new housing paid by local taxpayers, would be located far from peoples' work & take years to build. So… great solution!…. …Wankers!

in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

It's one of those "brilliant ideas" where you find a loophole to make individuals compete with companies, where the individual has less/no regulation because 'they're not a real company', therefore it's cheaper and no-one is responsible, but the "company" still makes a sh*tload of money by just having a website.

Another "privatise profits and public costs"

in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

I’m guessing that people, who were OK with Airbnb this far, don’t care about DOGE.
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

The pull of good and evil can have exactly equal strengths - until you let go of either’s hand.
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

Airbnb kills towns and neighborhoods . I’ve been asking people to boycott for quite awhile and now I have another reason to share .
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

Do you think he will have the same 'hands off' approach to DOGE as he does his business. He'll give an idea, get it executive, the have nothing to do with it when things go horribly wrong.
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

One of the other co-founders and active CEO of Airbnb is a staunch supporter of democrats and close enough friends with Obama to the point of operating a scholarship with him.

obama.org/programs/voyager-sch…

It's dubious where many Fortune 500 CEOs stand with regard to Trump, so Chesky's record in standing against him is especially notable. Given that, it might be worth pressuring him to speak out against, if not buy out, Gebbia's actions than to simply boycott Airbnb.

Unknown parent

@LaNaehForaday Amazing! Thank you for calling. I recommend having a backup place for listing, like VRBO.

For what it’s worth I don’t know about the company’s position. The cofounder is on the board of directors and has a large portion of the company ownership (shares). So this is why I took action.

in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

Airbnb and Uber are terrible companies. It appalls me how many people use them. I have never used either, and have no plans to do so in the future.
in reply to Roja πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

@viennawriter
Danke fΓΌr den wichtigen Hinweis. Benutze AirBnB schon lange nicht mehr, und jetzt deaktiviere/ lΓΆsche ich meinen account.
Unknown parent

@LaNaehForaday yeah I have been using them for 12 years. And they need to somehow cut ties with this guy before I’m willing to consider them again.

I want to make sure they understand this is way past the red line for most folks.

Coming back to add that I still have not been contacted yet when they normally are back with me within the hour.
Unknown parent

@LaNaehForaday you inspired me to contact them too. I called support. I didn’t want the operator to get in trouble so I told them that what I need is the message to be clearly communicated to leadership. The support person said ok and that they have an internal route for political issues. I worried that it was basically a glorified trashcan. But it seemed the operator agreed/cared about the topic. So I asked them to use their own judgement to make sure it doesn’t get ignored.

My wife wrote articles for a Manhattan weekly about AirBNB landlords buying condos and subletting apartments to rent them out as corporate housing in violation of the city's hotel laws and rent control statutes. That the CEO would join Musk in looting the government does not surprise me.
