Lord Howe Island

Five years after a massive effort to remove invasive mice and rats from Lord Howe Island, the unique ecosystem is experiencing what is being called "an ecological renaissance" as the endangered flora and fauna recovers.

Lord Howe Island woodhens were reduced to only 30 individuals in the 70s due to egg predation from the invasive rodents, but in just the last five years the population has jumped from 200 to over 2,000.

similar story on the South Georgia Islands. Heartening to hear that some things humans have broken can be fixed.

a great article, but how did they fail to mention the wonderful Lord Howe Island Stick Insect, Dryococelus, or the tree lobster???

Now that the rats have been extripated, will they re-introduce the tree lobster?

I watched a Tom Scott video form a while back where they've been doing similar in NZ to great effect. It just shows that throwing our hands up and saying "we can't do anything" should never be accepted 😁
