I wouldn't be against it.
Would probably also mean you don't have to invest as much resources (CPU, RAM, storage etc.) for "bogus accounts".

I can totally understand that. But if it were like that when I joined mastodon I would not be on this instance now and I found some very interesting people here. πŸ˜ƒ

@joacim I think we used to have that here but it became a PITA to sort through it all.

I would rather see that than uncontrolled growth. You're the one in charge of deciding when it's "big enough", and all the administration you've done since I joined leads me to believe you'll make a good decision.

My 2c on the matter, for what is worth, are that the entire Fediverse is stronger when the various servers all choose to self-limit their size, so that overall control of the network is a spread out as possible. I don't know how many active users we have on this server, but it still feels comfy judging by my feed. I'd hate for that too change, so if you feel like it's getting full, by all means take action.

Lastly, thanks for running it. And thanks for upping our word count back when you did that - I think it fosters deeper discussion and I'm glad that we have that opportunity to write a little more in depth on this instance.

Your server, your rules. For what it's worth, I wouldn't have been able to join this server if it was invite only, as this is my first mastodon account.

I went to the server list on joinmastodon.org and filtered by Technology and Europe, and took a peek at local traffic to see what the vibe was. This seemed like the best fit for me by far.

I *personally* don't care much whether the person on it is "nerdy and snarky", as long as it's a real person.
What I *do* care about, is you not having to waste lots of resources on "bogus accounts", especially given that the resources aren't exactly free either.

I understand the sense in limiting registrations, particularly as you seem the only person running social.linux.pizza (?), and expanding indefinitely would imply the need to changing from that to having a team, and having to manage them has its downsides.
Likewise I think medium size instances work better and add resilience to the Fediverse.
However I'm a bit unclear how invitation only would work. When I joined in December 2022 I had to give a reason for choosing this instance and you then had to approve the application.
If it was invitation only would you be the one to send invites, in which case I would imagine invites would be quite rare, or could existing members sponsor an applicant?
in reply to MarjorieR

@marjolica

Existing members can create their own invite link, so this instance would'nt be that impossible to get in to :)

The main argument is to promote people to create their own instance, or check out other ones
This instance has been listed on the joinmastodon.org since 2019 and is among the most well federated ones.

Also, there is an extra moderator that is doin some work in the background aswell. But to be honest - things are not that bad anymore. There is not much spam that is reported since I have done the ground work the last 7 years.

I am the sole owner, but I outsource the hosting and maintenance to @hosting because I value time more than money.

in reply to πšœπšŽπš•πšŽπšŠ

@hosting thanks for the reply and clarification.
And continued thanks for running this instance so effectively - absolutely no complaints.
And thanks too to your quiet extra moderator.
in reply to πšœπšŽπš•πšŽπšŠ

@marjolica @hosting I was going to ask about you having help. I think with a co person onboard, and allowing existing members to invite are all suitable options if it goes invite only.

Overall, if it's not too bad now, probably not worth it, as it would inevitably prevent at least a small fraction from getting onboard who would like to join? IMO only, I respect your decision either way - as someone said, your server, your rules πŸ™‚

in reply to JSkier

@JSkier

Being onboard in the moderation team is no problem.
If you have matrix, send me your user ID so I can add you to the two person Modereation room :D

in reply to πšœπšŽπš•πšŽπšŠ

fair enough, whatever you think will keep this instance go at a sustainable pace, may be decent to fight against potential bots too if barrier to entry is higher
