did anyone want to hear a #Shakespeare speech castigating nativist cruelty against #immigration?
of course such a speech exists: bigoted malice against #immigrants is not new. the wicked have long yoked the ignorant and indecent for power
it refers to a real event: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evil_May…
it is called "The Strangers' Case" speech
from the play "Sir Thomas More"
here delivered by #IanMcKellen from memory
on "The Late Show With #StephenColbert"

Hats off to the camera operators and director as well, who shot it so well. The in-house audience will probably remember that experience forever.
Thanks for sharing it!

this play had many authors, constantly revised
historians believe for this speech lines such as
"For other ruffians, as their fancies wrought,
With self same hand, self reasons, and self right,
Would shark on you, and men like ravenous fishes
Would feed on one another."
and
"but chartered unto them?
What would you think To be thus used?
This is the stranger's case,
And this your mountanish inhumanity"
are directly attributable to Shakespeare's hand

Reminds us that progress is not inevitable, but is a constant struggle. In some ways, we actually regressed compared to some previous civilizations

(Prior to delivering the soliloquy, he goes on a tangent involving the tune "Some Enchanted Evening" by Rodgers & Hammerstein, which is also well worth watching.)

ian breaks it down before he begins the speech:
more appeals to 1. law,
then appeals to 2. humanity
yes, the appeal to law is dumb, you are correct
but the appeal to humanity is still in the speech
and that's what matters here, and what people are celebrating

As he is clement if th’offender mourn,
Should so much come too short of your great trespass
As but to banish you: whither would you go?
What country, by the nature of your error,
Should give you harbor? Go you to France or Flanders,
To any German province, Spain or Portugal,
Nay, anywhere that not adheres to England,
Why you must needs be strangers. Would you be pleased
To find a nation of such barbarous temper
That breaking out in hideous violence
Would not afford you an abode on earth.
Whet their detested knives against your throats,
Spurn you like dogs, and like as if that God
Owed not nor made not you, not that the elements
Were not all appropriate to your comforts,
But charter’d unto them? What would you think
To be us’d thus? This is the strangers’ case
And this your mountainish inhumanity.
