Anyways, on a more selfish note for today - if you want to do something that I would appreciate for my birthday, the best thing is to read/listen/play through something I made and let me know if you found it interesting or what I could do better or tell other people about it, because I churn out a lot of text and stuff and most of it feels like it drops into the void.

So incoming list of things I did (or at least got released) while being 30:

I released a computer game in December! It's a free little procedural generation and text heavy RPG called The Exile Princes where you wander around a silly medieval fantasy land and can find companions, followers, quests, lovers, and bizarre creatures and eventually make your faction rulers of this curious realm:

I got a paper published on Armeno-Georgian nobility and how their ideas about rule and rulership worked in the 12th-13th centuries:

I wrote a song about Sam Vimes:

I wrote this piece on when to use lower 'focus' (more mystical and mysterious) forms of magic in games, and how to produce some of those effects:

In much less fun news from more recent months, I wrote a longish piece for my politics blog outlining my initial expectations for the current US regime and how it might develop.

I wrote an intro to the mythology of Asturias with some ideas on what makes it that way and how one might re-use some of the ideas in fiction writing:

I wrote this rather serious poem called The Lost Child of Amberlea which touches on themes around modern life, isolation, and bureaucracy:

And I wrote a silly song about the problem with "X hero could beat up Y hero" arguments

I wrote a fan song about sheep running amok:

And a fan song about Solas, the Dread Wolf Fen'Harel of Dragon Age:

And very importantly I wrote about what would happen if Medieval Europe was humorously examined from the perspective of a person with two cows.

And that was a big dump and I'm now feeling very self conscious so I'll stop posting and crawl under a blanket (proverbially because today is an office day).

But yes, I make things, they're mostly quite silly, and if you find any of them interesting then please do tell me because it's nice to know that there are people out there not just empty space I share my verbiage with.

this is lovely and so perfect for Vimes. I feel you incorporated so many Vimes-y concepts and iconic lines, but in rhyme. And I love the focus on the boots and the familiarity of the patrol, which gets to the heart of Vimes. :)

@vicorva I'm glad you think it works :) It's one of my longer songs but I think it says the things I most wanted it to say.

Looks really fun :) Any chance we can make it screen reader accessible? I think literally having incoming text read by a screen reader, which you can do with a third-party library, would already make a huge difference :)
in reply to Florian

@zersiax I did spend time looking into trying to make things screen reader accessible - I don't think that there's any library that does it for the current version of TKinter which underpins this, which is really frustrating. If you know better or know anyone who could advise me more, it's something I'd like to implement, but for a free project and with my level of coding skill there's only so much I can do unfortunately. :( It's definitely something I'll be working harder on for future games!
in reply to James Baillie

TKInter makes it trickier but you can work with python proper; accessible_output2 should be usable as, mostly, a drop-in to echo the text being output. That won't help with menus but with a bit of OCR that might still be doable, we'd need to test :)
in reply to Florian

@zersiax Oh, OK! Would you be up for having more of a chat about this sometime soon? I don't know how soon I'll have a day to look at it but I'd love to have a go at it if it's possible.

I just want to say that this looks amazing and the only reason I haven't played it yet is that it's on my to-stream list and I want my first impressions on-stream 💙
in reply to V, The Dragon Witch 🌙

@vicorva I will have to do something fun & extra for the game when you stream it! I have a couple of ideas :)
