lets say someone made an OSHW touch device running linux that's intended to fit in your pant/dress/jacket/handbag pocket. what would be the maximum display size (diagonal, inches) you would tolerate? bonus if you like rabbitholes like this: maximum thickness and weight?

extremely low-fi and thicc protoype to test some dimensions and weight (crafted with cardboard and tape by @theawesomerandomness around pocket reform electronics)

@theawesomerandomness Wow, FOSS and OSHW touch device.
If the device has the following features, I am willing to make sacrifices in thickness, weight and price.
A slot for microSD card and nano-SIM, Microphone, Speaker, Audio Jack, Camera, WiFi & Bluetooth, USB-C, long battery life.
Privacy switch for LTE/GNSS, WiFi, Bluetooth, Microphone, Speaker, Camera.

A 6~7in 4:3 screen'd prolly be a good size. And anywhere <500g would be fine I rekon. Not too weigty but a bit'a heft is nice. Fer thickness I'd like to see it stay under 15, but whatever makes the parts fit is what it'll be I guess.

Not to advertise it, but I currently use this device: aliexpress.com/item/1005007298… The dimensions there are about correct (161mmx92mm) with a thickness of 23mm. This is probably the max size I could use, it is even a bit too wide for my hand, but bearable. Would this device include a gsm modem?

ir should have a rugged shell, and perhaps a strap, so one could hold it over the shoulder like a women's handbag. Should perhaps have a cover with in-built keyboard (a la Windows surface, but better?)

Good luck!!

Pickpockets are experts at using a small knife to cut open pockets at the bottom to let the content fall into their hands but are less eager to try that on a front pant pocket than on a side/back pant/dress/jacket pocket or handbag. At the same time some sturdiness can help to avoid bendgate.

Larger than a Kindle Paperwhite is problematic but that device fits into my jacket’s inner pocket.

7.3 inches diagonal (5:4 or 4:3 aspect ratio) display size, 13 mm thickness and 350 g weight

I should have specified fold-as-in-GBA-hinge, not fold-as-in-bendy-LCD, but also: Keyboard or no keyboard?

so the "problem" is I want all the combos, or rather never know which combo I want.

I suspect this would be a big engineering challenge, but what if the mainboard were a separate thing that could:

- snap onto the touchscreen to make a tablet
- snap onto the keyboard to connect to an external monitor as a desktop
- snap onto the keyboard, then attach to the touchscreen with a hinge somehow to make a laptop that protects the screen while travelling
