What chaffs my crisps is that the author refers to Austen's period as 17th C. No, no, no, she's late 18th, early 19th C! She's Regency! She's Georgian! This is easy to verify, why are journalists so lazy?

Always nice to read logics explaining Jane Austen. As member of Dutch Jane Austen, till it vanished , I dare say things went a bit further than that. JA'S caleidoscopic view , describing a person in a few words only, sharp as a razorblade, but never damaging . Composing sentences with multiple parts, the first starting , two for the content, the last for the final clue. Written by and for female ? They are still the best, whatever gender.

🔋 At COP29, six countries pledged to 6x their energy storage by 2030, while in the U.S., battery capacity has grown to the equivalent of 20 nuclear reactors in just four years.

😡 COP29 has at least 1,770 fossil fuel lobbyists in attendance, 123 with badges from the host country.

💡 Where you bank matters. $1000 in a fossil-fuel-investing bank can have the same carbon impact as a cross-country flight—every year.

Climeworks carbon capture and removal

From Badvertising: Polluting our minds and fueling climate chaos:

The only provably legitimate offset [for carbon emissions from a flight] would be an engineered solution that removed a measurable amount of carbon directly from the atmosphere on roughly the same timeframe as the plane exhaust put it there, and indeed this option is now available for purchase from a company called Climeworks - at a price of around $1,000 per ton. This is approximately 100 times the price of an equivalent offset from a low-cost carrier like Ryanair; readers can no doubt draw their own conclusions.

Climeworks “is the first direct air capture company worldwide to achieve certification of its carbon dioxide removal activities…”.

From what I’ve read, it is the real deal. It's not just for businesses, but for individuals too. Use them to do your own offsetting.

Thanks! Yes, clicked the "show more." Today I can see several more photo captions. But still only the 1st photo. ?
in reply to Dirk

It's all easy to see now. Thanks! You packed a lot of adventures into one day!

Roman Britain

I biked to Saint Albans today, and went through Varulamium Park, as I have before. But today I made a point of seeing more of the remains of the Roman walls that once were around the town of Varulamium, which was the third largest city in Roman Britain. I’m a history nut so I found it especially interesting. Enjoy the photos!
in reply to Dirk

That hand-built, stone pavement is amazing. And it's lasted this long!

Why did the Romans call their city Varulamium?

Trail cameras

Hi !Friendica Support,
I'm looking for something like the Facebook group Muldoon Area Trail Photos and Videos on Friendica, or in the Fediverse. (More info here.) I haven't had any success searching, but maybe I'm doing it wrong. Any advice?
Thank you!

in reply to Dirk

I don't remember seeing any friendica groups like that. There may be something on Lemmy or Kbin.

@Dirk Go to global directory and click on groups and scroll through. The search feature is a bit buggy but there is only 212 groups at the moment. If there isn't one you can always start one.

More biking on Arran

I finally have another video to share from our bike trip on Arran, Islay & Jura.

Sharing photos

Hi !Friendica Support,
I took a lot of photos and videos on a bike trip I recently went on. I'd like to share these photos and videos with the other participants of the trip on a platform that also gives them the ability to upload photos and videos for sharing. These participants are not (yet) users of Friendica. I'd also like to be able to limit this group sharing to just the participants of the trip -- in other words, I want to control access to the photos and videos. I've looked at the different kinds of account types (personal, organization, news, community group, etc) but if I understand them correctly, not one of them meets my requirements. Any thoughts?
Thank you!

@Dirk

The article is now also available in English...

You must first install the ‘Guest Access’ app and add it to the app menu. This is easy and is explained here:

Biking on Arran

I made a video comprised of photos taken every 5 seconds while on a bike tour of the Scottish islands of Arran, Islay, and Jura in the UK. Here it is:

Auchagallon Cairn

We stopped at Auchagallon Cairn on the first day of our biking trip on Arran, Islay, and Jura in September. Here's a video of it:

A walk around the Hauptplatz in Linz, Austria

Ellen and I walked around the main square of Linz, Austria. Trams, bikes, walkers, old-world charm!

Here's some video of the Braemar Highland Gathering, taken on 9/7/24. Not very polished, but it gives you an idea of what it's like.

This launderette is wild! I could see something like this in a tropical setting, but in wet and chilly Scotland?! Someone's definitely thinking creatively!

Day 3 of biking

Here’s our route from yesterday. We went by van from our hotel in Bridgend, and started biking there.
in reply to Dirk

Is the countryside scenic? Do you stop at the roadside for a picnic lunch, or snack along the way?
in reply to Lany

@Lany The countryside is very scenic. I've got loads of video that I hope to edit and post in the next few weeks.

There was a supply of snacks in the van and occasionally we would meet the van to get snacks and hot drinks. We stopped at cafés and restaurants for lunch, or ate on a ferry.

@Lany

Biking day 2

This was our biking route yesterday, our first day of biking:

We have two guides, and there are eight of us. Three of us — including Ellen and me — are using regular bikes, and five are using e-bikes.

Ellen was a champ yesterday! She made it up the biggest hill without stopping. 🚴‍♀️

Here she is when we got back to our hotel:

Here is today’s route, Including two ferry trips, So we didn’t actually bike 63 miles.

I’ll post more about today’s activity later.

in reply to Dirk

You guys are covering some ground! (And water, I guess! 😊) Will you be coming back to the same hotel every evening? Or moving to accommodations on another island? You're going to be in such great biking shape by the end of this trip!
I know that e-bikes fill a valuable role, such as in place of cars for commuting, but you and that third guy must feel a real sense of accomplishment at the end of each foot pedal-powered ride.
in reply to Lany

We are staying at one hotel for three nights, another hotel for two nights, and another hotel for one night.

A little sea bathing will set us up forever

Ellen and I had a goal to take a swim in the ocean before the summer ended. Yesterday that box was ticked when Ellen and I crossed the road in front of our accommodation, the Glenisle Hotel, walked across the rocky, sandy, seaweedy beach and took a dip in Lamlash Bay. The video evidence is here (link).

Bonus points if you recognize the quote :-D

in reply to Dirk

The bay where you swam looks very picturesque. Do you have any idea how cold the water was? You two are brave!
in reply to Cobie

@Cobie We think the water was in the low 50s 🥶
But the sun was out and we warmed up right away - especially Ellen, because she was dressed in black.
in reply to Dirk

By the way, @Lany and @Cobie, the quote is from Pride and Prejudice. :-)

Starting the bike trip

This morning we took the train from Glasgow Central to Ardrossan Harbour in order to take the ferry to the Isle of Arran. Here's Ellen chatting with the ticket examiner in the train as we left Glasgow (link).

Here's the Ardrossan Harbour ScotRail station (link).

Here's another view of Ardrossan Harbour. Notice the wind turbines in the background:

However the ferry had a mechanical issue. Here's the ferry with its hood up so that it could be serviced:

We took a short bus ride to Troon, where we boarded another ferry:

Pics from train trip and Glasgow

We were able to move to seats with a window. Here's a scene near the Lake District. If you look closely enough, you'll see sheep.

A look up and down the carriage of the Avanti West Coast train that brought us from London to Glasgow. We were pulling into Glasgow and people were getting ready to disembark.

Video of Glasgow Central Station.

Ignore the guy's rear end. I took the photo because of the wonderful variety of fish sold here. Not something a guy raised in the US midwest is used to seeing.

Ellen at the Main Gate to University of Glasgow. Very impressive old buildings!

We're going to the Isle of Arran and will definitely have some of this ice cream.

Video of one of the quads at the University of Glasgow.

Still at the University of Glasgow. Good for them!

More U. of Glasgow.

Glasgow street scene.

On the way back to our hotel from U. of Glasgow, we stopped for some fish & chips. Ellen took a silly photo of me.

in reply to Dirk

Fantastic! So glad you had clear weather, although it looks a bit cool. But that'll be wonderful for biking!

And I love the "Managed for Wildlife" approach of Scotland's "Pollinator Strategy!"

in reply to Dirk

How fun to see these photos of Glasgow! I can smell the fish and chips from here!
