Rather surprised to continually learn from online headlines that Charlie Kirk was killed ", age 31."
How many headline writers found this noteworthy? And how many of them quoted, in the headlines they crafted, their ages at death of innumerable schoolchildren murdered in mass shootings at U.S. schools - human sacrifices on the altar of the #NRA's shibboleth, the #2A?

This is indeed true but there is such pressure these days to shift orthodoxy ever more to the Right, indeed to build a House extension in which to re-site the Overton Window that I find it useful to listen occasionally to the quiet voice of the young lad pointing out the Emperor's naturist tendencies...
RIP Melissa and Mark Hortman, assassinated on June 14, along with their beloved dog Gilbert.
Gilbert was trained to be a service dog but was let go from the program because he was “too friendly.”
Where was the outrage then? Were was the outrage for the Minneapolis shooting? Were was the outrage for the Colorado shooting? Why is Charlie Kirk's murder a "political assassination" but no one is saying that about the Hortmans?

Maybe it has something to do with that weird secret that Trump and Epstein had?
We all thought it had to do with his some kid they raped together or something but really they had devised a plan to make society decide some half of it (those inclined to tolerate pedophilia) could be killed off by the other half but not visa-versa. This way the pedophiles and rapists among them would be safer.
Hard-right Christians do tend to support child marriage.
Why is Charlie Kirk's murder a "political assassination" but no one is saying that about the Hortmans?
We all know the answer...don't we?
Well said!
I may add I personally have no sympathy for violence, but Kirk got a taste of his own medicine.

Normal people don't know who Charlie Kirk is. My mom, dad, husband, neighbor are very confused why it's such a big deal.
Which is good to remember. He's never done anything notable. Didn't run for office, didn't break a big story, didn't write an important book.
So, for a lot of people this is all very confusing.

Most people find politics very boring and obnoxious.
To some degree this can be by design, to keep people from engaging.
IDK I don't think this is a big deal. Or rather it's exactly the same size deal as all of the other shootings. Which just keep coming.
myrmepropagandist reshared this.
I don't think this will stay in the news all that long. Unless they find the shooter and they are some kind of person the right wing can villainize.
That is possible but given the pattern of these types of shootings I think it's a little unlikely. But we shall see.
@BonehouseWasps @JamesWidman @wonkothesane
Yeah. I keep forgetting that people treat this like folklore not something that is really happening. It's all a story with villains and heroes. It's a team sport with sides.
Maybe that is why the fact that Trump was shot by right wing members of his movement just can't stick in people's heads. It's not as good of a story.
I knew about him because my 14yr old Australian child told me about him.
My impression is because Kirk was relatively young (31), he was more of a known entity to younger people.
e.g. my child follows progressive commentators on TikTok and Kirk's views were discussed there.

A lot of far right online people were recently VERY mad at him for covering for Epstein among other things.
For left wing online types he was a reliable punching bag, more embarrassing than threatening.
For people who have felt the sweet caress of grass on their feet? They are all saying Who???
myrmepropagandist reshared this.
@troberts "more embarrassing than threatening..."
He's called for violence against the transgender community.
Also called for overturning the Civil Rights Act.
FA? Meet FO.
Worth noting that while my parents also didn't know his name.. my teenager and her friends absolutely did.
His target audience was younger.
I think it's very possible this attack was coming from one of the people who used to like him, angry because of the Epstein cover up. That's where *violent* rhetoric about this guy was coming from most recently.
Some of his fans had a para-social relationship with him. He's always been propped up by right wing big money, while trying to "reach out to the youth" and trying to seem "anti-establishment"
The cognitive dissonance of a recent statement he made "I will trust my friends in the government" (on Epstein) caused many of his fans to attack him. They were VERY mad.
So, that's what I suspect. Of course I could be wrong.
myrmepropagandist reshared this.
@jbrownesq@mastodon.social so he was the 'youth pastor' of bigoted fascists, got it.
Explains why I never heard of him.
@jbrownesq I think it's important to not care too much about who he was.
He was a person who thought school shootings were ok, the necessary price of the second amendment.
He was a person who thought queer people should be killed.
He was a person who thought the Civil Rights Act was one of the greatest mistakes in history.
You don't need to know more than that. He was a shithead and we're better off without him. That's all that matters.
I could totally be wrong. We still have no idea who this guy was or what he was on about. To some degree it doesn't matter because living with these shootings all of the time is intolerable.
A right wing fan who felt alienated.
A left wing extremist fixated on Kirk for some reason.
A person who didn't like Kirk for personal or imagined reasons not related to politics.
Anyone can buy a gun, it's so easy. It's even easy to buy one and no one knows that you have it.

I thought he was ultra-left antifa super-solider. What changed?
Sensitive content
Oh yes. White shooters are always described as quiet and people say they never could see it coming.
Even the ADL had a file on the guy for violent rhetoric. This is the "I don't feel safe if the pilot flying the plane is black" guy. Very racist, anti semetic, anti Arab, hated immigrants, wanted women to be put back in a box. His death doesn't erase how he choose to live his life.
It's horrible that there are so many shootings in public places. None of us should have to put up with it. Especially school children. And now it seems they can't even catch this most recent shooter.
One of Trumps inner circle he was a college dropout with a talent for fundraising and appealing to the lowest common denominator.
I knew who he was and am unapologetically delighted he is gone from this world.
Me too. Didn't know who he was.
Feel sorry for his wife & kids but from what I've read, good riddance. 🤷♂️
To me that was the scary part.
He had an organization larger than the young republicans indoctrinating students destine for places of power more important than trades or labor in terms of politics.
And no normal person has really heard about him.
He was part of a pipeline warning kids that "the crazy liberals will cut off your genitals and make you pray to Stalin!" And then he offered them a "safe space" from a boogey man who didn't exist.
Like so much of this regimes network, he was just another nobody with a suspiciously funded org making sure educated people got the right indoctrination before going off to be political staffers or lawyers or whatever.
He is amongst the modern embodiment of the banality of evil.
🍂🌬️Robot Diver🌊 reshared this.
This is what the money on the right wanted him to be very badly. And he had so much funding he made a little headway.
But, it was not an efficient operation. He was caught buying views and fake subscribers.
A lot of younger people know him because there are so many videos making fun of him.
I worry about Nick Fuentes more when it comes to playing this role.
It is interesting that Kirk initially fell in line over Epstein files and then doubled down in calling for their release.
I'm surprised FBI doesn't have a suspect yet.
my partner literally showed me the video of the shooting, and called him "some nazi guy".
later while watching youtube went "who the fuck is this charlie kirk guy" completely unaware of who it was. (hes a construction worker who is wonderfully unplugged)
he had no clue, but had seen the video in context of "nazi got got"
I'm annoyed with the liberals fretting over the optics of "disrespectful" online reactions to this news and frankly by some of the reactions that ignore the dynamic of this kind of violence. The pattern with these things has been "disillusioned right wingers"
I would like to talk about all of the very upset well armed unstable people we've been farming as of late.

> He's never DONE anything notable.
Yet he was very much notable for the literal evil that he propagated, disseminated, and encouraged.
If being normal means being unaware of such existential threats, then I'm proud that I put in the work to NOT be normal.
@JosephMeyer That’s sad for you, Joseph.
I thought most people in the US had some understanding who Charlie Kirk is. Definitely in the Phoenix AZ area that TurningPoint had so many rallies for Trump and Trump attended here.
He was also in news quite a bit like headlines even from APNews to Salon to NPR and also online places like Twitter, C, TruthSocial, RawStory, Reddit etc.
Especially outside the US.
I was taken aback yesterday when I got the breaking news notification that *Trump* had announced Charlie Kirk's death. I was like "who?".
Some of the things he is being quoted as saying ring a bell, but I've never associated them with his name. He wasn't high profile like Joe Rogan, Richard Spencer or Milo Y.
@CptSuperlative Captain, your question will be answered in Wired.com in a breaking news article today about the Charlie Kirk killing.
When one’s participation in politics is just Parasocial Relationships replacing both community and political thought processes, it really makes sense why so many people are galvanizing around one primarily online guy with a podcast.
It’s like putting flags half mast for a talk show radio host passing.
Utterly bizarre behavior until you realize that for a large portion of the Right, Politics to them is just Parasocial Relationships with online celebrities. Then it makes sense why the figure head would stand out more than one’s actual elected representatives
honestly i would’ve been one of those people had I not been listening to Tim Alberta’s book, The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory (which is damn good btw) this week
In fact, I paused the reading in the middle of the chapter that featured Kirk to run an errand this afternoon, only to turn on the radio in my pickup and hear the news that he’d been shot
I don’t know what word describes that phenomenon, but that was definitely too much of it today
But whether his assassination turns out to be a big deal will depends on to what extent Trump and his cronies and billionaire masters try to use this as an excuse.
Kristallnacht was justified as the response to the assassination of Ernst vom Rath, a not that important German Diplomat.
I try to keep track of all the English-speaking cultural "influencers" on the far right, both sides of the pond. I'm part of an anti-racist group who do that, and there are various private spaces where we share info.
That makes me atypical. I doubt anyone in this English town had a clue who Kirk was before, and most probably still have no idea today. News of his death will have been lost in the white noise of all the other reports of shootings in America.
I wonder what went wrong in my personality for me to know who he is and what kind of things he said. Seeing as I live in Germany and maybe should worry more about my own country going downhill fast.
And maybe that's the point: Germany's politics are so frustrating that I keep distracting myself with other countries' horror shows 😕
Even those who know who he is can wonder why his death is so newsworthy.
People are shot and killed every day in this country, hundreds actually, hundreds every day. It's the leading cause of death among children!
All of these are tragic and avoidable. But only the smallest fraction of a percent of them get as much attention as Kirk's.
What makes him special? Why are we talking more about him than the children who are shot and killed every single day?
Patrick Hadfield reshared this.
I have to say I'd never heard of him before seeing reports of him being shot
Then when I read more about him I lost any interest
Unlike the kids in the school shooting that happened on the same day, three of whom were in critical condition from the vanishingly few reports I found, anyone know how they're doing ?

I never heard of Charlie Kirk, nor did I understand why there was so much gnashing of teeth and rending of clothes by right wingers. It was another shooting in the US, on the same day as a school shooting in the US, where shootings are, unfortunately, a regular occurrence.
I still don't understand the reactions. But, I'm not desperate to bump the Epstein files out of the top spot in the national conversation.
Just an interesting insight - my son works for a police force (civilian side). His forces (there are three who work together) are suffering from cash problems and are making cuts.
And yet another force - the Met, not far from us - is spending so much of their resources on arresting pensioners and peaceful demonstrators.
If there is not enough resources, maybe reducing the time and amount spent on doing stupid and useless stuff.

The homeward journey took an hour from dropping the car off to getting home, I am now taking a slightly different route with a longer walk back to the garage after I get off the bus.
I was slightly thrown earlier on this journey when I could hear somebody saying that this next stop is ......, and the next stop is......., and I realised that there were speakers in the ceiling of the bus!
Spoiled by having a car!

Subject: Pirates of the Mediterranean
Dear MP
What sort of response am I going to get from the UK Government, via yourself, that will justify the latest international lawbreaking of the Israeli Government?
Dropping drones on unarmed boats in Tunisian waters, dropping bombs on Qatar targetting people who are trying to negotiate for peace, and the Israeli Defense Ninister saying the Gates of Hell have opened on Gaza.
Also, also why the F*** is Starmer welcoming the President of Israel today, he should be arresting him for complicity in war crimes!
A disgusted, disapointed constituent!
