📽️ The Royalty Cinema, Harbourne, Birmingham. A grand and lavish Art Deco venue built in the 1930s, witness the golden age of cinema. Lost to arsonist flames, now only a memory.

...this volume of essays by Camus first published in 1938.
I don't follow IVE closely enough to know if Liz is actually reading this book. It could well just be a prop, although I would be delighted to discover that the book is hers.
Book or no book....

As an impecunious teenager in the UK years ago, I was delighted to pick up this recording of the 5th Symphony of Shostakovitch for 50p at W. H. Smith.
I had already heard and been delighted by the 1st Symphony, so I spent my money on the strength of the composer's name alone.
It's a very different work, of course -- dramatic, bleak at times, but also lyrical and perhaps ironic too. I've never tired of it.
I've listened to some of the other symphonies since then (not the 2nd or 3rd) but come back to the 1st and the 5th as my favourites.
It might not be obvious from the garish album cover that this recording is in fact a reissue of....

"Cat and I" -- Wanda Wulz -- 1932
I've only just heard of Wanda Wulz. I thought from her name that she was either German or Austrian, but Wikipedia tells me she was Italian.
Nevertheless, her native city of Trieste belonged to the Austro-Hungarian empire when she was born in 1903, so my guess was not completely off.
I thought this picture might speak to the many cat lovers of the fediverse.

Nieuws uit Nederland @Nietlientje has just posted this 1932 photo from the Schiedam municipal archives of the Hygiea gymnastic association.
There's a rich history, of which I know too little, of gymnastic and calisthenic movements during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries -- Swedish gymnastics, the "Battle of the Systems" in the USA, the Sokol movement in the Czech lands...these Dutch women belong to that history.
From which socioeconomic class or classes did associations like this draw their membership? Was this association enclosed within one of the three "pillars" - Protestant, Catholic, and social democratic -- of Dutch society at this time? Did this kind of association survive into the second half of the twentieth century? I suspect not.
I was also struck by the women's unshaven underarms. How pleasing to see a world in which axillary depilation has not yet become a norm!
