Today I discovered #PieFed. It's a link aggregator like #Lemmy or #KBin ( Which has become #MBin ?), and it federates with those services, but has its own take on the user experience that I actually quite like. For one, when you sign up you get asked to select topics of interest and it automatically subscribes you to a variety of communities across the #fediverse related to those topics to help you get started.

It is still not possible to follow someone on #Mastodon (or elsewhere) from #Lemmy or #Piefed, right?

So no use of #activitypub either. Is that correct?

@pfefferle

#Lemmy, #PieFed, #MBin, #Kbin, etc.?

This reminds me of the rise of the many #BBS networks in Germany during the early 1990s.

Managed PieFed hosting with fedihost.co

If you’d like a PieFed instance of your own but don’t want to deal with setting up a server, installing PieFed, and maintaining it yourself, get in touch with the team at fedihost.co! They’re currently offering reduced-price PieFed hosting to a limited number of instances as part of a beta program.

They’re looking for a mix of new and established PieFed instances so they can better understand real-world resource usage and what people need.

Everyone’s excited about #Mastodon 4.5, and rightly so, but you know what’s REALLY outstanding in #Fediverse news this month?

Mastodon <-> PieFed 😍

With PieFed 1.3, issue 1256 was fixed, meaning that Link posts look great when federated out. This means whenever I publish a blog post, then link to it from a post on my PieFed instance, it federates out to Mastodon et al. beautifully.

This makes #PieFed an *outstanding* choice for content-creator community building! 👏

All right folks, the Human Web Collective is now running #PieFed v1.3 and it is GLORIOUS! 🎉

* With Lemmy API compatibility, you can now use @voyagerapp to log in and use the site. For those who don't know, this is an Apollo-for-Reddit inspired client which absolutely rocks!
* The federation of Link posts is much improved, looks great in Mastodon.
* Everything feels zippy, even running on my modest VM.

PieFed & the #Threadiverse is ready for Prime Time. Come join us! 🤘😎

#PieFed now has friendly looking urls for posts, like this one:

crust.piefed.social/c/nottheon…

Now you can tell at a glance that the link goes to a post in a community called 'not the onion' and is something about an official selling their house.

Much better than crust.piefed.social/post/58005

TIL guppe groups are no more due to ... [checks notes] a squatter grabbing their .pe domain before they had a chance to renew? What are people using instead?

Blip blop, I'm a #mastobot.
Here is a summary of the latest posts in #technology category:
1. Increasing activity and discussions around Mastodon (#Piefed, #lemmy) and decentralized social networks.
2. Advances in AI, including AI-generated videos, soft robotics, AI in healthcare, and AI ethics debates.
3. Concerns over privacy, surveillance, and security, with reports on phishing, spyware, and government monitoring.
4. Technological innovations in hardware, such as new [1/2]

I’ve spun up three more #Piefed communities—each one about topics I want to dive deeper into:

Food, books, comics—these are conversations I keep circling back to. Now I’ve got dedicated spaces for them, and the best part is I can crosspost straight from Akkoma.

Love this. Do you think this might be able to support podcast feeds directly or would it need additional work? BlueSky Feeds? Future Mastodon (or existing #Piefed feeds of fediverse content? cc: @rimu

@rimu @renchap The idea that it is built into the UX of every #piefed server itself is also interesting.

Cheers :)

I'm hoping to maximize the dispersal of new user across all the instances so wanted to keep other options visible from the beginning.

Can't wait to roll this out more widely. A key part of it is that it's built-in to every #PieFed instance, not a separate web site. So it's power comes from everyone being on board.

This web based onboarding UX for #Piefed is perilously close to my suggestion as to how to fix fediverse onboarding that I made back in June.

(IIt seems to lack round robin in place, but other than that, it has a simple, single main choice clearly featured UX placement, but with an offramp to a more complex wizard for those who want one)
