Canada's Sweetest Heist

From 2011-2012, Quebec was the scene of a bizarre agricultural crime. Thieves stole nearly 3,000 tonnes of maple syrup, worth $18.7 million, from a warehouse holding the province's 'strategic reserve.' This global reserve, managed by Quebec's producers to stabilize market prices, was hit by a complex theft that required a massive investigation to unravel.

At 11:18 I made myself a slice of bread, with cream cheese spread.

Had to answer a call and when I came back to the kitchen at 11:42 the bread was still there. However, the layer of cream cheese was gone.

Were still waiting for forensics, but we already have a main suspect.

She currently refuses to testify.

Police recommends to keep your eyes peeled for cheese thiefs in the area.

I just thought everyone should know that there is apartment complex in #hongkong called the Wang Fuk Court Apartments.

Which I found out about cuz my brain loves disaster documentaries, and it was involved in one.

That's already in #joke form, I don't really have to do much.

In the introduction to UNSPEAKABLE ACTS: TRUE TALES OF CRIME, MURDER, DECEIT, AND OBSESSION, editor Sarah Weinman writes about wanting pieces that call out problems in "the true-crime industrial complex", and she wound up with an excellent collection of true-crime pieces from the 2010s. The selections are generally very good. A thread of the highlights: (1/7)

Eunice Whitman's boyfriend was indicted for her murder on flawed evidence. A defense witness wrote that police should have treated no fewer than 12 people as suspects of “higher interest.”

A decade after the killing, no one has been convicted in Whitman’s death

Janet and Estes on their porch in the 1960s. Where they lived, in the heart of Appalachia, was rife for real crime stories. Shady sheriffs, grifters. I stumbled upon a shady sheriff in 2017, and after researching that town and the bad lawman and his cronies, I wrote a novella: GOOD OL' BOY, published in '23. I also learned that crime was not my thing. #truecrime #crime #novella #books #bookstodon #scribesAndMakers #writing #writingCommunity #fridayVibes #author #writersCoffeeClub #writer #book
