Aged animal individuals often become unable to survive because their sensory organs increasingly fail to function. An animal that can no longer interact with others of its conspecifics, because it can no longer perceive them, will not survive long in a social group. Similarly, an animal unable to smell, see, or hear its food will sooner or later starve. However, researchers have now discovered using Tyto alba that owls retain their most important sense, hearing, well into old age. It used to be that is you had a heavy wax buildup in your ears, your doctor or a nurse or PA would clean it out for you.

But starting about ten years ago, that changed. Now they just tell you to buy an ear-cleaning kit with fluid from a pharmacy and do it yourself.

At least, that's how it is in the USA now. I wonder if it's like that in other parts of the world?
