Hi everyone, it is time for me to post my first own art here. 😅 It’s been like a year since I last painted something, but I really wanted to try out the effect of the Memileo Impasto Brush-pack (huge thanks to @emilm for creating those brushes 😍).
Day #11 of Figure Construction - Another day, another gesture study. A bane to my gesture and mannequin drawings is the joints. Elbows and knees. For some odd reason, I can never get them to look right. Boxes for joint is more useful in terms of perspective and form, yet spheres are more universal. At certain angles and bending of the joint, boxes flatten things.
I honestly don't know what to do to make them look... better. As much as I know this stage of the figure drawing is for me and serves a more informative purpose than an aesthetic one - it still bugs me that they end up so... disjointed. Arms not attached by the shoulder, legs and arms divided up by the knee and elbow.
If I look at someone like tenten云画画 over at Artstation, those mannequins and gestures are more akin to what I'm after. Minus the liberties they take with proportions and the poses which are both... quite something.
I might have to hold that off until I get to a later stage. Maybe the joint stage, which according to my n

Day 174 - 177 as a Doodle Rōnin - Second study of line weight/art for the hair, let's go! I freakin' hate this reference, at least the hair part. It's so above my skill level to get right because of its messy nature. I am getting better though, so it gets less daunting with each pass, yet... [sigh]
Oh, and reviewing the work book notes, I discovered you're supposed to use triangular shapes to make the shadows. They can be bent and distorted to better communicate the form they're wrapped over/around, but should still generally read as a triangle. And there are three options; closed, open (where one edge is missing), and loose (basically just one line).
Although I implemented it in this study, it didn't pan out too great. Though as mentioned earlier, this is a nasty reference to study given my current skill level. I might fare better with other references.
Aside from the hair, I experimented a bit with the mouth. Several artists have mentioned that you don't need to finish a line for it to make sense. So this time around, I didn't draw the corner of the mouth

Day #4 of Figure Construction - Interlocking forms, now in living color! Okay, so the biggest take away from this session is that I struggle to think in 3D. I kept falling into the same 2D mindset when I tried to position the circle that made up the sphere. So, even though I got the point where the edges meet correct, the sphere would often be either too small or too low. This is because I kept "seeing" the red sphere as a complete sphere, when it's only part of a larger whole - much which is hidden by the green box.
It's a bit embarrassing that I did the same mistake twice during the freehand, but hopefully by writing it down I won't make that mistake again. Or at least be more conscious about it. Time will tell. For tomorrows session, I think I'd like to have one big sphere and other forms protruding out from it. Just to mix it up a bit.
