This photograph shows the coastal area of Redwood National and State Parks on Saturday. Gentle waves, blue skies with an offshore cloud layer, and a collection of birds (including gulls and pelicans) appear in the photo. At this time of the year, Redwood Creek is separated from the ocean by migrating beach sand. The beach sand has formed a spit (foreground) on which the gulls and pelicans (and likely others) are gathered. Behind the spit, metallic blue waves roll onto the shore. A solitary pelican appears in the sky (center) just above the horizon line. Grey-white clouds and a medium blue sky make up the top half of the photo. Similar conditions were noted on Sunday as well.

For much of the year, these rocks (left foreground and center right) are partially submerged and inaccessible. Thanks to a lucky combination of tide, moon phase, and seasonal sediment movement, a brief window of opportunity allowed for a visit yesterday. Marine life-including bivalves and sea stars-can be seen at the base of the large rock on the left. Gentle waves continued to roll in during this visit, prompting a quick collection of photos. The water was extremely cold. The sea stars (lower left) are orange and red, the rocks (foreground and center) are grey and silver, the sky (upper right) is a bright clear blue. Redwood National and State Parks are truly a diverse and wonderful set of habitats!

#NPS, in a separate document, similarly said that people should “wear an n95 mask when outdoors” & “remain indoors as much as possible during & after the show.”

Another internal document designed to take demographics in the area into account advises NPS staff to “not treat race, ethnicity, income, disability, age, or language as risks by themselves.”

The combustion from large #fireworks displays typically causes significant #pollution because it generates fine particulate matter, also known as PM2.5. These small particles can penetrate deep into the #heart & #lungs, causing irritation & in some cases #asthma attacks & other illnesses.

A draft #air-quality analysis, based on the #NPS’s modeling, states that people should “avoid prolonged exposure” to the pollution around the Mall.
