A year ago, I was taken aback by the publication, on a digital platform, of a letter from President Donald #Trump imposing a 50% #tariff on Brazilian goods. Its very first paragraph referred to former president #JairBolsonaro — who was #convicted last year for attempting a #coup d’état in #Brazil & is now under house arrest — making the political motivation behind the measure explicit.

“On Friday, #Trump said that “numerous European countries” had been discussing putting a digital services tax on US companies.

“Please let this statement serve to represent that any country that imposes such a tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America.”
He added that the #tariff would be immediately imposed and supersede any other prior trade deals that existed with the country.”

With flexibility charging and using mains power, this tariff is very pleasing.

"From his #tariff jamborees to his daft warmongering, #Trump’s caprices have now thoroughly degraded daily life in these United States, bringing us high #inflation, rising gas prices, and sluggish economic growth. It further turns out that siccing a masked and armed police force on expats, foreign nationals, and immigrants demoralizes a nation and squeezes the labor supply." newrepublic.com/article/210588…

theguardian.com/business/2026/…. This is very bad news for #US #monetary #policy & #inflation, & will be bad for the future of the US #dollar as an #international #trading #currency. It seems #Trump & the #Republicans are determined to add currency #war to #trade & #tariff war. Paul Krugman speaks today of the "Apotheosis of Willful [sic] Ignorance" (paulkrugman.substack.com/p/the…). This #appointment is a classic example of precisely that.

#Trump says he'll place 25% #tariff on #autos from #EU, accusing bloc of not complying with #trade deal

Trump said Friday that he will increase #tariffs charged on #cars & #trucks from the EU next week to 25%, a move that could jolt the world #economy at a fragile moment.

Trump said in a social media post that the EU “is not complying with our fully agreed to Trade Deal,” though he did not flesh out his objections in the post.

Thinking it’s a “coup” (or a smart win) just because it brings in tax revenue is a mistake. It’s a destructive policy. He taxes his own citizens to fund his budget—all while pretending it’s foreigners who are footing the bill. In doing so, he destroys American competitiveness. By 2026, manufacturing anything in the USA will cost more than elsewhere because of the price of imported parts. It’s slow‑motion economic suicide, all to satisfy a slogan.

But if the recent uptick continues, #MortgageRates will add to a list of concerns that could keep #home buyers on the sidelines, said Hannah Jones, a senior economic research analyst at Realtor.com.

“Spring feels very uncertain,” Jones said. “This definitely feels like we’re back where we were a year ago: #tariff uncertainty, #economic uncertainty, #geopolitical uncertainty. All of this is making the path ahead seem really unclear.”
