The Unfortunate Truth
in reply to Hacker News 100 • • •Freedom to have your phone overheat. Seriously, can @GrapheneOS please work on efficiency?
But yeah, these days anyone who resists the regime's data gathering is a 'criminal'. So be gay, do crimes.
GrapheneOS
in reply to The Unfortunate Truth • • •You likely ave apps draining your device's power by doing too much work in the background. GrapheneOS does not cause phones to overheat. You'll need to determine what's causing power to be used such as trying 4G-only mode.
9th generation Pixels other than the Pixel 9a finally have a cellular radio with high efficiency. CPU and GPU performance and especially efficiency will improve with the move to TSMC from Samsung. Samsung's manufacturing process isn't as efficient.
The Unfortunate Truth
in reply to GrapheneOS • • •It was not overheating like this on Android. Nor does my old Samsung A70 when running the same apps.

in reply to The Unfortunate Truth • • •@athamanatha @GrapheneOS tech here that manages things on the bus
it causes their pixel6a to overheat esp when running hotspot which doesnt happen on original os
i also audit logs from logfox
GrapheneOS
in reply to inamruzui • • •@Kuniti_shino @athamanatha GrapheneOS does not use more power than the stock OS. GrapheneOS uses significantly less power in the default configuration due to how little is running compared to the stock OS. With a similar setup, it will use around the same amount of power.
It's easy to set things up in a way that it uses more power. For example, many apps doing their own background push instead of centralized FCM is inefficient.
Hotspot is not any more or less efficient on GrapheneOS.
GrapheneOS
in reply to The Unfortunate Truth • • •@athamanatha This is due to how you've set up your device, not GrapheneOS itself.
If you used a single profile with Google Play on the stock OS, then compare that to using a single profile with sandboxed Google Play on GrapheneOS. If you're using multiple push implementations on GrapheneOS or similar differences in configuration, that will change power consumption. Having many apps doing their own push isn't efficient.
You should check the OS battery stats which may show the cause(s).
GrapheneOS
in reply to GrapheneOS • • •@athamanatha It's common for the cellular radio to use a lot of power, especially with a poor connection. 5G uses significantly more power.
The non-budget 9th gen Pixels have a quite efficient cellular radio but earlier Pixels and the Pixel 9a have significantly less efficient cellular, especially for 5G.
You can save significant power by setting the cellular network mode to either the standard 4G mode (meaning 4G or below) or the 4G only mode added by GrapheneOS.
