hey, it was a terrible idea to place the Ukrainian and Russian translations on the same page. If you have the time, better edit the slide.

I need help! I want to make this vintage cape. I cannot make sense of how the lining works.

Is there a seam on the bottom edge? I don't know much beyond late 1930's and French. The translation is basically "short cape in a matching fabric with faux sleeves of fur."

And no, I don't think this is AI, just an artist not bothering with some of the details. It's pretty common in fashion drawings of this era.

in reply to 🌬️Robot Diver🌊❄️🌨️

@RobotDiver The white fabric is likely fur, per the translation. I've seen extant capes and evening coats with similar fur edgings.

But the ruffle? Maybe it's supposed to be green and the artist got the coloring wrong? That sort of detail only makes sense if it's not fur, but fabric.

I'll see if I can find any extant garments with an extra ruffle next to fur.

[…] at least 70% of the AI hype that’s bottom-up — eg, excited users — is people who never learned how to actually use their computer suddenly realizing the computer can do things for them

all the schadenfreude aside, it’s worth remembering that AI and agentic AI is being hyped and pushed on people who don’t know programming, don’t understand APIs, and just assume the AI would do something similar to a person- figure out (or know) when morning is, set some internal timer, then issue the reminder at the right time - all for “free.”

In fact, they are told that the beauty of AI is that they don’t need to know.

The fact that AI is profoundly different and a simple request can have unintended consequences is not talked about enough.

New From CULC: National Social Impact Study on Public Libraries in Canada,

From the Canadian Urban Libraries Council:

On January 30, 2026 CULC/CBUC released a first-of-its-kind National Social Impact Study on urban public libraries in Canada, exploring the role public libraries play in community life and social wellbeing by drawing on data and lived experience from more than 18,000 respondents across 26 Canadian urban public library systems.

Background

In partnership with the Danish firms Is It a Bird and It Depends, CULC/CBUC conducted a national study using several research methods, including online surveys and individual interviews. The resulting report offers empirical data that explore in depth the value of public library programs, spaces, and services in the communities they serve.

I remember constantly playing the B side, on the community centre's juke box. It was called "There Ain't Half Been Some Clever Bastards". Better than the A side too! 😁

I spent a lot of time today sitting on a gorgeous beach near Auckland. (Was I stewing about how fucking stupid SpaceX is the whole time? Yes, yes I was. See my previous post if you don't know why.)

Tomorrow I pick up a rental car and start the Beatrice Tinsley lecture tour portion of the #ProfSamLectureTour. I'll have some extra fire for these lectures because SpaceX sucks. More immediately, wish me luck driving on the opposite side of the road tomorrow!

in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

Tell me about it. I didn’t trust myself when I visited Australia many years ago to drive a car just because I know my brain would revert to habit on driving on the right side.
in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

Just remember that whatever turns you make, you as the driver should always stay towards the center of the road and you’ll be fine. At least thats what worked for me.

IBM PC-DOS 5.0 (1991), minty fresh and still sealed after 35 years.

One of my personal favorites, when it comes to retro operating systems. PC-DOS 5 still included EDIT.COM and QBASIC.COM, as well as an updated DOS Shell with mouse support.

same here! It was installed on my first PC, a 286 with 2MB of RAM and a 40MB hard disk. I was coming from a VIC20 and it was a huge step forward for me.

REPOST: emptywheel @emptywheel on Bluesky

A sound piece of messaging and also an explanation of the way Schumer and Jeffries MAY buy leverage with this deal.

in reply to Mastodon Migration

I definitely don't understand all of the dynamics at play, but I think this deal puts a shitload of pressure on Thune and Johnson, and I can't figure out what leverage they can use to get out of it.

the $75B for ICE from the big bad bill is not affected by these negotiations. ICE will continue to operate no matter what because of that. The argument is about the other DHS funding. The dems have a weak negotiating position in the first place. newsweek.com/a-government-shut…
in reply to Mastodon Migration

The media is not going to explain stuff to us, but just now we are finding out the big bad bill also appropriated money for ICE, That is not normal. The GOP was a step ahead on this one.

@Terryno, they either keep deyning that you were correct even as the consequences physically manifest themselves in front of them, OR they agree as stated, but it is far to late at that point for any peaceable solution.
