Jonathan Freedland, Hadley Freeman, and David Aaronovitch have all declared they will no longer have anything to do with the Jewish Chronicle.

It took this bloody long for supposedly 3 intelligent writers/reporters/journalists to be slightly uncomfortable at the toxic manipulation of British Jewish opinion in order to uncritically support Israel whatever. Shame on them.

The reporting is good, the headline much too glib. "Winning streak." The destruction of democracy is not a game. #GoodTImes #BrokenTimes (Gift link)

in reply to Jeff Jarvis

Unfortunately, for the US, I fully accept that the New York Times does consider the destruction of democracy a win.
in reply to Jeff Jarvis

"Winning streak." Reminds me that anyone who says SCOTUS justices are neutral arbiters is lying or willfully ignorant. I think to certain justices, it *is* a game, a competition of ideologies.

Last Tuesday Don Trump shat his pants on national TV. Ever since, he's been scooting his butt around on the national carpet to dislodge the detritus of loserdom. It's standard narcissist self-care behavior. It would be nice if all of this could be *only* funny.

the-reframe.com/its-time-to-op…

in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

Unfortunately, it can't be only funny; Trump and his gang are engaged in some shockingly evil rhetoric even for them—promising that, for the crime of existing while undesirable to conservatives, as many people as possible will be hurt, as soon and as badly as possible.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

There is a town, name of Springfield OH, and it was a declining town—declining since the 60s. But Haitian immigrants were willing to come, and fill the jobs that were there to fill.

"Adding humans" is what makes a declining town stop declining, in case you didn't know that.

in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

That wasn't good enough for our nation's "conservative" political party, which is a white supremacist party of religious bigots. If you doubt this claim, I will refer you to the party's Vice Leader, the gimlet-eyed adult Cabbage Patch doll and fascist-of-opportunity J.D. Vance.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

What happened is that Vance's boss, Republican presidential candidate/pants shitter Don Trump, energizes his base by promising to deport 15 million people, which is a thing that has never before been done without concentration camps and genocidal mass murder entering the picture.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

The people Trump claims he wants to deport are people in the United States who are undocumented—a group that Trump and his fascist gang call "illegals"—which is a pretty rich term for a gang of thugs led by a convicted felon awaiting sentencing to append to others.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

And Vance is nothing if not a good little gold star seeking grade grubber who would sell out his own family for wealth and power, so he went and found a lie that was bubbling up from the more hateful corners of the internet, the places where Vance's sort of people can be found.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

In the Nazi internet, Vance found a vile racist lie about the Haitian immigrants in Springfield, and he told it all over the place, and he's still telling it now.

It's a lie. It's a vile lie. There is no evidence that any of it is true. None.

in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

Eventually the lie found itself being repeated by Don Trump at the debate:

"They are eating the dogs, and they're eating the cats, and they're eating the pets of the people who live there."

Which is interesting, because the Haitian immigrants ARE "the people who live there."

in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

Trump's formulation works only if the Haitians don't live there, or if they aren't people, and that latter formulation is of course what all these bigoted thugs are trying to do: dehumanize them, in order to further marginalize them, in order to justify violence against them.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

And violence has come to Springfield, as violence was intended to. There are bomb threats, and threats upon threats and lies upon lies, and elementary schools are being evacuated, and Haitian Ohioans are hiding in their houses, trying to keep their children safe.

"Keeping children safe," incidentally, is something that conservatives claim is important to them.

in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

J.D. Vance, United States Senator candidate for Vice President of the United States of America, a man with a very real path to becoming the most powerful person on the planet, is actively trying to get people in his own state murdered, because they are immigrants and Black.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

And Vance has got the full buy-in of his boss on this, and Trump has the full enthusiasm of his party—the "conservative" party.

We should be clear that this is openly Nazi behavior.

We should probably just come out and say that we have a very popular Nazi party in the U.S.

in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

If you want to quibble over names, let's just call it deeply evil with murderous intent, in a way that is entirely indistinguishable from the historical examples of genocidal propogandists who have come before.

We've seen all this sort of thing before. We know where it leads.

in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

And all of it done to oppress people from Haiti—the nation to whom Trump was referring when he famously claimed not to want immigrants from "shithole countries."

But Haitians aren't the only oppressed people.

Conservatives are oppressed too. They'll tell you all about it.

in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

Conservatives are oppressed by immigrants, of course, even though immigrants add value to their communities and always have, even though immigrants uphold the values conservatives claim to hold dear more than conservatives do.

But immigrants oppress conservatives by...existing.

in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

This oppression takes the form of conservatives having to be aware that immigrants exist, and through other people accepting immigrants, and through laws that accept immigrants, all of which creates an expectation that conservatives will accept immigrants, too.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

The expectation that conservatives will accept immigrants, instead of terrorizing and bullying and expelling and killing them, is a very oppressive thing for conservatives to endure, and if you don't believe me, go ask them.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

Conservatives are oppressed by queer people, too. This, even though queer people want to live life on their own terms without being forced to live on another's terms, which is something that conservatives claim to care about.

Queer people oppress conservatives by...existing.

in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

This oppression takes the form of conservatives having to be aware that queer people exist, and through other people accepting queer people, and through laws that accept queer people, all of which creates an expectation that conservatives will accept queer people, too.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

The expectation that conservatives will accept queer people, instead of terrorizing and bullying and expelling and killing them, is a very oppressive thing for conservatives to endure, and if you don't believe me, go ask them.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

And conservatives are oppressed by the existence of anybody adhering to a religion to the dogmas of their apocalyptic exclusionary yet domineering brand of Christianity. This, though their religion admonishes them to not be the sort of people they insist on being.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

And also conservatives are oppressed by the existence of people languishing in poverty and abandoned by our shared society—people who have lost homes, and disabled people, and sick people, and people who don't have jobs, and people who have been imprisoned, and on and on.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

This, even though many conservatives ARE languishing in poverty, or disabled, or sick, or out of work; this, even though many more conservatives will find themselves in such a state, particularly if they get the sort of cruel and exclusionary society they demand.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

And of course conservatives are oppressed by women—the existence of women, I mean, and the fact that women have bodies, and the fact that those bodies produce too many children, and also not enough children.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

And conservatives are oppressed by the fact that these women want to have some say in how many children their bodies produce, and when, and with whom—which explains JD Vance's creepshow obsession with the viability of their eggs.

This, even though many conservatives ARE women.

in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

The list of people oppressive to conservatives gets added to daily. Teachers and journalists are being targeted now, and librarians, and people who aren't sexy enough, and people who are too sexy, and performers, and people who are too smart and people who aren't smart enough.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

Honestly it's just a squirming knot of slithering fearful hate at this point, the sort of thing that makes you a bit queasy whenever you have to consider it—which is often, unfortunately, because conservatives are the most over-represented and over-accommodated people on earth.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

And on and on, if you listen. The existence of people oppresses conservatives, and the sight of others caring for such people oppresses them, and any laws curtailing of the ability to threaten such people oppresses them. It's never-ending oppression of conservatives out there.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

You know what? Let's do it. Let's actually do it.
I think we ought to oppress conservatives.

For the very first time in our nation's history, let's oppress the oppressors.

It seems like a great idea.

They talk about being put in woke re-education camps or something and, like, let’s do it, it will get them to shut up.
in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

Yes! I keep seeing this #ConfoundingGoebbelsianLie from conservatives. It's like on South Park when Jimbo and Ned are hunting, and regulations require they yell, "They're coming right for us!" just before they fire. Same shit - fake an attack and "retaliate to defend yourself." It's an old well-worn bit of bullshittery.

and what galls me the most is that his wife is South Asian and a child of immigrants and his children are bi-racial

they will be safe though, even though their husband and father is a despicable dangerous evil racist

in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

I heard that too, and you’re the first person I’ve seen call it out. Thank you

Haitian immigrants have just as much right to live in Springfield or ANYWHERE in the US, and THAT’S what the racists are really objecting to, using vile lies to do so

in reply to A.R. Moxon, Verified Duck 🦆

In one of the most striking moments of Sidney Lumet's film Twelve Angry Men, a veritable masterpiece of the closed-room drama, Juror 10, one of these Very Fine Conservative people, goes off on a very racist rant against the defendant. Gradually, the entire rest of the panel stand up and turn their backs to him, disgusted by his behaviour. He becomes more and more plaintive, demanding that they listen to him, until Juror 4 finally says, "I have. Now sit down, and don't open your mouth again."

Unsurprisingly, the proceedings are generally saner from that point, by which I mean that they have less bigotry. And at the end, lacking that 'reason' to hate, even he elects not to offer a guilty verdict, as reason finally prevails over rhetoric.

And I daresay we're in agreement that if that is oppression -- that we have taken the opinions of the hateful under advisement, considered, and rejected them -- then we need much more of it in this world.

I added a new subpage to my website:

Story of my homelab.

It's meant to be a history of all the iterations my homelab went through since 2019. It's not a blog post as I plan to update it with every new upgrade of my server(s).

Maybe other homelabbing bloggers will also create such pages? That would be super cool to exchange our stories :3
