More rooftop solar in cities would help solve NZ’s energy crisis – and build disaster resilience
New Zealad’s current electricity supply crisis requires immediate solutions. But we argue the government’s emphasis on importing natural gas and construction of centralised solar farms is a missed opportunity.
The case against gas has been highly publicised because of its greenhouse gas emissions and substantial costs.
But the government’s focus on large solar infrastructure in rural areas, away from our main centres, misses a chance to address two urgent issues at once – the need to cut emissions and to adapt to climate impacts.
Instead, we should plan local renewable energy generation, integrated into communities, to improve New Zealand’s energy security and disaster preparedness.

"Today I read yet again someone suggesting that using ChatGPT to rewrite code from one programming language to another is a great idea. I disagree: a programming language is an opinionated way on how to better achieve a certain task and switching between world views without understanding how and why they do things the way they do is a recipe for inefficient code at best and weird bugs at worse."
"I decided to test my theory with Google's Gemini - I've seen students using it in their actual coding (probably because it's free) making it a fair choice. I asked the following:"
"Convert the following code from Python to Elixir:"
The code looks equivalent, but it's only equivalent for the normal case -- if the input is bad, the Python and Elixir code behave differently. I think this is a good example of how LLMs can make translations that look correct but aren't in subtle ways.

I'm not really up on the latest, but I'm pretty sure cross language translation is a major challenge. I doubt that it would scale up very well. Imagine going into a cobol shop and having gpt rewrite cobol into a modern language and modern modularization and abstractions.
But I can imagine developing some good gpt tools that would help untangle the usual spaghetti code of a legacy system. I have some long ago experience with doing that, and let me tell you, legacy information systems can be a god awful mess.

Reminder that donating to the Harris campaign through #MastodonForHarris isn't just about the total amount of money raised, it's about the number of donations.
Of course we aren't going to outraise these billionaires, but what all these people who are willing to throw even $5 at this thing are showing the political world is that this is a network full of people who are engaged enough in politics to put our money where our mouth is. You can't say Harris doesn't have any supporters here, nor can you say we are just sitting on the sidelines, when over 100,000 people have given her money.
And you know, if someone is willing to give you $5, they are most definitely going to vote for you. You might even be able to get them to volunteer, or strategize around what this large group is doing.
This is a show of power.
This is proof that, if they give this network a chance, it could be a good place to get support from.

Yeah I already follow Tim, I guess I just didn't see it.
Oh well, maybe I can hit the next thing. Is anything else like that coming up? Any residual activity from it?
What a week!
I discovered the FediForum unconference on Mastodon and spent the next three days learning about ActivityPub, web fingers and hooks, and the history and politics of federated social media from some of the originators. I’ll have to level up my technical skills, again. I spent a few hours finding, learning about, and following folks across Mastodon instances and then closing scores of tabs.

New blog post! This time I'm taking a look at fonts. I ran into a floppy disk containing a pair of extremely cute dingbat fonts - a tokusatsu helmet alphabet, and a set of decorative lucha mask characters. They're well-designed and very detailed.
