Facebook has been hosting paid adverts for charities fundraising for Israeli army battalions accused of war crimes and lawmakers encouraging the resettlement of the Gaza Strip.

Eko, a US-based campaigning organisation, identified 98 Facebook adverts targeting Europe and the US to solicit funds for Israeli army equipment, including advanced thermal drones, assault rifle sights, armour, night vision goggles and helmets.

A US judge ruled in favor of Meta Platforms' WhatsApp on Friday in a lawsuit against "Israel's" NSO Group, accusing the company of exploiting a vulnerability in the app to install spy software for unauthorized surveillance.

US District Judge Phyllis Hamilton in Oakland, California, granted WhatsApp's motion and determined NSO was liable for hacking and breach of contract.

@gael bonjour :)
Merci d'avance !

The first time Palestinian actress Maisa Abd Elhadi was arrested was just days after the October 7 attacks.

At 11 a.m. on Oct. 12, 2023, the police showed up at her home in Nazareth, illegally confiscated her phone, and proceeded to take her to the city’s central police station.

There, she learned that she was being investigated over two posts she had shared on Instagram on October 7.

Of all days in the year, this one I find most important. This is the day where in Scandinavia the word Jul (Yule) comes from. It used as "christmas", but it actually means "wheel". Because today is the Winter Solstice, the wheel has gone round, it is the start of the true new year. From now on the days will grow longer again. So have a good Yule everyone!

I've never seen the wheel reference, I'd love to read more if you have a source for that. What I've seen in etymology entries both in English (yule) and Scandinavian (jul, jol), is a reference to the protogermanic jehwla meaning feast or holy day, but it seems to stop there. If there's a cognate to wheel I can't find it, suuper interesting though? Please share :)

@silhelm I heard it once in an interview with a norwegian proffessor in linguistics, also in modern norwegian the word ''wheel'' is ''hjul''. Almost the same actually. The symbol of the Sun wheel which was in wide use amongst the celtic and germanic tribes was also used up until quite recently in Norway. I found one edged in a rock once and asked a local historian. He couldn't tell me how old but he said it might still have been carved in the 1700's.

@silhelm It's weird, I can't find a direct reference either, but since the etymologi of ''hjul'' is ''hwehla'' in proto-germanic and ''jul'' having ''jewhla'' as an origin in proto-germanic, combined with the importance of the winter solstice in ancient times and the sun wheel symbolism, the connection is self-evident in my mind.

ah darn. A homophone does not cognate make.

@silhelm But on the other hand, the connection is to obvious to be ignored. Like how school children pointed out that South America and Africa fit together like a puzzle and yet scientists opposed the idea of plate tectonics quite long despite the obvious answer. I haven't found any english sources, but on the norwegian wikipedia at least it states that Jul was originally the winter solstice celebration before christianity. So I think labeling it as a homophone only is a bit unintuitive.

@silhelm I haven't heard of any such link to wheel - other than it's a homophone. Jul (iul, Yule, feast, mid winter period) and hjul (hiul, wheel) have the same pronunciation in Swedish but different roots.
in reply to CubeThoughts

@CubeThoughts @silhelm All right, I eventually found out on the danish wikipedia that it was an older proposal that "Jul" and "Hjul" were related, but no linguistic evidence was found to support the theory. I heard it mentioned by Norwegian Prof. Gunnstein Akselberg on national tv that the words were related. I kind of hit myself on the head for not thinking of the connection before since I knew of the importance of the solstice celebrations and the sunwheel symbolism in the ancient world. 1/2

@CubeThoughts @silhelm 2/2
Here are a few examples of the sun wheel/sun cross symbolism from the bronze age. A wheel with four spokes (probably symbolizing the two equinoxes and two solstices). The symbol is also found in a lot of stone carvings in Scandinavia and I've seen it numerous times on artifacts in museums as well.

I am honestly really quite perplexed by the two words just being homophones, because the connection seemed so blatantly obvious.

@CubeThoughts language isn't logical, and if the root is different, homophones they are. Serendipitous homophones maybe, but nonetheless.
