My 70-something parents happily use Signal.
My friends have steadily been converted to Signal - latest being this week.

The surprising thing for them is that it works “just like WhatsApp”, and I don’t think the ease of interaction and parallel utility is something they expected.

I think maybe it’s a thing missing in privacy-centred, or even in open source software, that the learning curve puts too many people off. I’m glad Signal doesn’t (or hasn’t so far in my contacts’ experience).

#signal

in reply to Tanya

Exactly. Someone needs to get this across to all those people pushing #xmpp as a better solution. It just isn't for 99% of users. I'm glad it exists but it is NOT an equivalent to those other platforms, not yet anyway. And #Signal offers both the privacy and the ease of use.

If Signal would only stop asking people for a phone number at signup, it would be perfect. A LOT of people just refuse to use a platform if they are required to give a phone number.

IMPORTANT: New Policy... A few days ago, I expressed concern over Meta’s new fact-checking and content moderation policies. When Threads announced its move to the Fedi over a year ago, we chose not to take preemptive action. Instead, we saw that we had all the tools needed for proportional responses to potential threats to keep our folks safe. And as we stated then, we would treat Threads.net like any other Fediverse server.

@alwynispat Do not foresee that being needed. But always looking at what we need to do based on changing circumstances.

I found a #Python module that handles floppy disk images.. I- rarely use other's code, unless I check it first, and I check things very slowly... But I'd rather use this than write my own. There are so many new things! And this code is about 4 years old. f"spam {eggs}" stuff, assert. I feel totally schooled on my out of date mild programming skills.😓 But what ever! I'm learning, and if this works, I might be able to do cool floppy things.

In your defense, I'm a #Python veteran and I despise the "f strings", a string literal should be static, not call any functions. Hate 'em.

But, yeah apart from that, the language has progressed steadily and impressively in recent years. Have fun learning all the new toys and all the cleaner ways to code!

For folks who like "loyal" devices (as @ethanz puts it), e.g. FLOSS, non-spying, etc., any favorite tablets or e-readers? I'm e-ink curious but that's not required.

It's not a perfect match to your requirements but for ebooks I use Calibre on my laptop (available for Linux) and connect that via USB to feed epubs to my PocketBook eInk reader.
The reader theoretically comes with its own shop but I have never used it and there are no ads. The only reason I sometimes turn on the wifi is to access books from my local library. But you can run this device without ever connecting to the internet without problems.

@coatilex thanks for this. Why is it so hard to have a book without a store in it? My favorite ereader was the Sony reader before they added a store to it. Such a great device.
