Wonkette's Doktor Zoom has good, zingy commentary on Jon Stewart's "who could have imagined" admission that his anodyne, misleading both-sideism about Biden-Trump and Democrats-Republicans didn't see what a lot of the rest of us saw coming: savagery, looming dictatorship, real horrors.

As Doktor Zoom writes, "He sure seems reluctant to see that the problem isn’t that we’re 'polarized,' but that we’re under assault and maybe the problem isn’t that in the face of gathering fascism, some people are going overboard by burning some Teslas…."

I'm reading similar commentary about another icon of many US liberals, Bill "But Trump's So Charming and Nice" Maher.

As a fellow white man who, in contrast to Stewart and Maher, has never enjoyed all the perks and privileges heterosexuality affords, I can only say that I long since began turning a deaf ear to Stewart and Maher and men like them.

Privilege blinds. Unexamined privilege — and the colossal privilege afforded striaght white men is too seldom examined by said men — spectacularly blinds.

@306555fee4433582b32f6d46f11b644da33896595016893d7da18c75fd7fdf12 I'm in NZ because the library assoc is flying me there for a keynote. I'd come to Oz in a heartbeat if I had a paid gig and then do as many bookstore events as I could cram in.
in reply to Cory Doctorow

Sorry to hear we are clueless again. All good AU things come from NZ, so we'll eventually catch up after the apocalypse :)
I just did a search of my local library and they carry 12 of your books (no down and out or picks and shovels) but I'll drop in and ask them if they can talk to tha AU assoc.

@pluralistic: Feeling more and more justified in my long-standing disdain of Teslas going back to the start. Always was dubious of the whole "move fast and break things" mentality being applied to cars.

"This is the beginning of an American policy of state terror, and it has to be identified as such…

Figma is taking steps to go public.

That’s according to a release from the company about a filing with the SEC, which says:

Today, we’re sharing that Figma has confidentially submitted an S-1 with the Securities and Exchange Commission, giving us the option to go public, pending SEC review.

That’s not a... Figma of your imagination. Last year, Figma CEO Dylan Field hinted to The Verge deputy editor Alex Heath that the company was looking at going public following Adobe’s thwarted acquisition of it.

Pokémon Go’s developer is laying off at least 68 workers.

Niantic Spatial announced the job cuts after it sold its gaming business to the Saudi Arabia-owned developer Scopely last month. But now we know how many employees may be affected, as a California WARN notice filed in March (but spotted now by Game Developer) indicates that Niantic will lay off 68 employees in the state on May 20th, 2025.

Damn, Good Smile didn't invest enough in 4chan's security I guess? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(In case you hadn't heard, 4chan has suffered from a colossal and likely site ending hack.)

Seriously though, there's claims that some .gov emails have been found in the leaks from the website. I can't wait for these fuckers to get exposed. (Edit: Awwww, seems most of the email "leaks" so far aren't real, sadness. Will update again if that changes.)

But in all seriousness, Fedi folks should be sure their own moderation and security is on lock right now. We are likely to be flooded with nasty fuckers due to all this, even if just temporarily.
