In 1899, Hans and Hannah Nelson hanged a murderer at Lituya Bay, a rare example of a frontier justice execution in Alaska. Jack London based a short story on the the incident. My article posting later today is another example of supposed frontier justice. #alaskahistory #alaska

The Mysterious Monster March: THE CONVERSATION
Illustration from a children's picture book that I am working on.

"After Meenu gobbles the crisp tartlets that
are offered, he asks "Where is everyone going?"
"I'm not sure" growls one, scratching its neck.
"It is a BIG mystery!", another whispers, smiling
nervously. One teeny monster mumbles
"I'm just following the others."

Okay fedi, if possible, let's have this conversation about bluesky:

It's terrible, and yet more popular than the fediverse, what's going on?

What are we doing wrong that a significant part of the world's discourse is still happening on bluesky (that I believe is a worse version of the fediverse both ethically and technically) and not on the fediverse?

Let's try and have this conversation without being holier-than-thou towards bluesky users.

@fancysandwiches oh yeah absolutely. The whole of bluesky feels like a huge doomscroll for me whereas while the fedi is sort of like that as well, atleast we can curate our own experience and prioritize it, unlike bluesky where the fedi equivalent of "explore" is the primary experience (which is filled with doomposts)
in reply to Jon

All that being said, it's not like Bluesky's got all this solved. Only about 15% of signups are still active users, not that much higher than fedi. MAU is decreasing, not growing. Bluesky's still mostly US-centric; Brazil, the UK, Canada, Japan, Germany and a few other conutries have a lot of activity but after that it gets really patchy. So while there's a lot to learn from what they've done well (and how to adapt it to the different norms here in fedi), there's also a lot to learn from what's not working so well both there as well as here.
