The main set of images of Mercury as seen by ESA & JAXA's #BepiColombo mission last night during its fourth & closest flyby yet have now been published.

They're available to download on ESA's website, but they've been enlarged to add logos & captions, making them too big to post on Mastodon 🤷‍♂️

As ever, it was a great pleasure & privilege to be with the mission team last night as the spacecraft made contact after the flyby & downlinked the data, to process the images you see here, & then to discuss with scientists colleagues across Europe & Japan what they show.

Are more sports coming to Prime Video?

Sources tell the New York Post that Amazon is in talks with Bally Sports for a deal that would simultaneously air MLB, NBA, and NHL games on Prime Video and cable.

The rumored sports package would reportedly let users watch local games for around $20 per month. Amazon already has an agreement with the NBA that will put dozens of games on Prime Video next season.

There are segments, platforms and eco-systems that focus on this. Uxn, PICO-8, etc. Lua and LÖVE in particular have subcultures that attend to dependencies as a first-class design constraint. (Not all Lua programs use LuaRocks.)

Part of why Löve pays attention to dependencies is that it's not trivial to include modules in C like it is to include modules on Lua. (you can to some extent, but then it becomes harder to work with stuff like love.js, which enables Love2D web builds)

Mercury is receding into the distance in this image taken by the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission in the early hours of 5 September 2024 as the spacecraft sped by for its fourth of six gravity assist manoeuvres at the planet. The image is a nice teaser of what scientists would like to study in much more detail when BepiColombo starts is main science mission in early 2027. For the first time, BepiColombo saw Mercury’s south pole (top right). Sunlight never reaches the floor of some craters in this region, so despite the planet being very close to the Sun, the land remains freezing cold, making it likely that there is water ice present. The surface of Mercury hosts many fascinating geological features, including four craters close to Mercury’s south pole. The large ring around the south pole indicates the area designated as the south polar region (the equivalent of Earth’s ‘polar circle’). Also in the image are the Mercury Planetary Orbiter’s medium gain antenna (top centre) and magnetometer boom (right).

The sunlit part of Mercury comes into view at the top right of this image, taken at 23:54 CEST on 4 September 2024 as the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission sped by for its fourth of six gravity assist manoeuvres at the planet. The image was captured by the Mercury Transfer Module’s monitoring camera 3 (M-CAM 3), when the spacecraft was about 555 km from the planet’s surface. The spacecraft’s closest approach of 165 km took place at 23:48 CEST. The surface of Mercury hosts many fascinating geological features. Of special note is the Stoddart peak ring basin: a mysterious 155-km wide impact crater that had no name, until last month. When the BepiColombo M-CAM team were planning for this flyby, they realised that this crater would be visible and decided it would be worth naming due to its potential interest for BepiColombo scientists in the future. Following a request from the M-CAM team, the ancient crater was recently assigned the name Stoddart by the International Astronomical Union’s Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature, after Margaret Olrog Stoddart (1865–1934), an artist from New Zealand known for her flower paintings. The back of the Mercury Planetary Orbiter’s high-gain antenna and part of the spacecraft’s body are also visible in front of Mercury in this image. Mercury Planetary Orbiter is one of two orbiters that will separate from the carrier spacecraft following arrival in orbit around Mercury.

This image of a rugged part of Mercury’s surface was captured by the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission on 4 September 2024 as the spacecraft sped by for its fourth of six gravity assist manoeuvres at the planet. The image was taken at 23:49 CEST by the Mercury Transfer Module’s monitoring camera 2 (M-CAM 2), just seconds after closest approach, when the spacecraft was only 177 km from the planet’s surface. The spacecraft’s closest approach of 165 km took place at 23:48 CEST. This makes it the closest image of Mercury that BepiColombo has ever taken. Although BepiColombo was very close to Mercury when taking the image, the camera was pointed towards the planet’s horizon, so the surface that we see is much further away than 177 km. Even so, the detail and resolution are astounding.
