one of the excellent local bookstores when i was growing up helpfully put dates on their price tags (thanks book revue!), so i just noticed that i bought david shenk & @stevesilberman's "skeleton key" 30 years ago this week, right when it came out. #deadfreaksunite @bookstodon

The main set of images of Mercury as seen by ESA & JAXA's #BepiColombo mission last night during its fourth & closest flyby yet have now been published.

They're available to download on ESA's website, but they've been enlarged to add logos & captions, making them too big to post on Mastodon 🤷‍♂️

So here they all in two toots as a preview, resized to the original 1024x1024 pixels, for you to enjoy.

Happy to have worked on them 🙂👍

Here's the second set of three images from the very close flyby of Mercury by ESA & JAXA's #BepiColombo mission last night.

As ever, it was a great pleasure & privilege to be with the mission team last night as the spacecraft made contact after the flyby & downlinked the data, to process the images you see here, & then to discuss with scientists colleagues across Europe & Japan what they show.

And as a bonus, several of the #BepiColombo images of Mercury were annotated to show craters & other features on the surface, including Stoddart crater, newly-named after the New Zealand painter, Margaret Stoddart.

Again, these are 1024x1024 previews at the original camera resolution; full-res version of these along with descriptions are available on the ESA website:

Anyone else thinks "transformative agreements" by big publishers aren't really that transformative? Seems like another way we 'bend' to their will and guarantee their comfortable oligopoly and survival.

in reply to Tel Amiel

Absolutely. That's why the Budapest Open Access Initiative 20th anniversary statement doesn't call them "transformative". For its full argument against them, see Recommendation 4. (Disclosure: I was a co-author.)

Are more sports coming to Prime Video?

Sources tell the New York Post that Amazon is in talks with Bally Sports for a deal that would simultaneously air MLB, NBA, and NHL games on Prime Video and cable.

The rumored sports package would reportedly let users watch local games for around $20 per month. Amazon already has an agreement with the NBA that will put dozens of games on Prime Video next season.

> It’s hard to write an app with 0 dependencies.

There are segments, platforms and eco-systems that focus on this. Uxn, PICO-8, etc. Lua and LÖVE in particular have subcultures that attend to dependencies as a first-class design constraint. (Not all Lua programs use LuaRocks.)

Now some shameless plugs of my own projects over 10+ years:
* github.com/akkartik/mu
* akkartik.name/freewheeling
* akkartik.itch.io/carousel

Anyways. There are dozens of us! 😂

in reply to Kartik Agaram

Part of why Löve pays attention to dependencies is that it's not trivial to include modules in C like it is to include modules on Lua. (you can to some extent, but then it becomes harder to work with stuff like love.js, which enables Love2D web builds)

Brand-new pics of planet Mercury, just in from the European Space Agency's BepiColombo spacecraft!

This close-up of Mercury's north pole was taken by BepiColombo's monitoring camera, so you see parts of the spacecraft framed against the planet.

Last one, for now.

Seconds after closest approach to Mercury, BepiColombo got this view of sunrise over the planet's rugged landscape.

These shots are just from the probe's monitoring cameras; the full science images will be amazing.
