One of several fascinating statistics on Britain’s EV charging network, compiled by the network mapping providers Zapmap. As of August there were over 35,000 locations where you can charge your EV. That’s compared to around 8,400 locations where you can fill up with petrol or diesel. 1,400 more were added in the last month. zap-map.com/ev-stats/how-many-…

Those chargers are distributed pretty liberally around the country. Greater London has the most by far (over 20,000), bulked up by an enormous rollout of street-based kerbside outlets. Many English regions are fairly level-pegging but Yorkshire, East Midlands, Wales and the North East are lagging. NI has the least but that’s serving a much smaller population. Check out the report for more insights.

PS. None of these numbers count the chargers that householders with off-road parking are able to install. Those drivers (about 60% of homes) can start a long journey with a full battery every day and, coupled with modern EV ranges over 250-300 miles) that is a major factor in determining the demand on rapid D.C. chargers.

Spacewalks on the International Space Station (2021) (filmed by the astronauts themselves)

Miscellaneous footage of astronauts working on various spacewalks outside the International Space Station during 2020-2021. As it's taken by the astronauts themselves, it features a variety of unusual angles and perspectives. Spacewalks are done very slowly and carefully in order to avoid any accidents, so please don't expect this video to be action-packed :)

This video was made by NASA and is in the public domain.

Shannon Osaka: California city approves industrial park next to one of Earth’s oldest trees: After months of deliberation, the city of #Jurupa Valley approved a development next to an oak tree that is at least 13,000 years old.

"One of the world’s oldest living organisms — which once sprouted next to giant ground sloths and other prehistoric creatures — will soon sit 550 feet from industrial buildings.

After months of debate that thrust the small city of Jurupa Valley, Calif., into the national spotlight, the city council approved a plan on Thursday night to build a development next to the Jurupa Oak, an ancient tree that has survived since the last ice age. The vote was 3-2."

A 2004 study evaluated Department of Agriculture data for 43 garden crops from 1950 to 1999. The researchers found statistically reliable declines for six nutrients — protein, calcium, potassium, iron and vitamins B2 and C.

Many vegetables today are either sweeter than their predecessors or less flavorful or both.

Corn, for instance, grows so fast under modern fertilizers that the internal cells split during the growth process.

Their stalks are weaker but their yield has more than doubled since the 80s.

If you want to learn more about that, I can highly recommend the book The omnivore's dilemma. It's fascinating how modern agriculture is so completely divorced from what most people think it is.
