Moderators will now have to submit a request if they want to switch their subreddit from public to private. Thousands of subreddits went private as part of last year’s protests.

SF folks, SF digital rights activists, general nerds and appreciators of internet history, I just found out about this:

Why did #JDVance delete this from his website?

JD Vance: “I never supported a national ban”

Also JD Vance: *calls for a total national abortion ban on his own website*

Despite the giant problem, I think I would be happy that something like that exists :)

Taiwan shut down Wednesday, grounding hundreds of flights and closing schools, offices and financial markets ahead of the arrival of Typhoon Krathon with one person reported dead. VOA’s Celia Mendoza reports from Taipei.

WHY do dead Israeli soldiers rate photos while the countless children and other civilians Israel wantonly slaughters in Lebanon and Gaza and the Occupied West Bank are always depicted as faceless numbers???

Senator Bernie Sanders has introduced legislation to block a $20 billion arms sale to Israel recently approved by the Biden administration.

The Joint Resolutions of Disapproval would prevent the delivery of offensive weapons that the State Department approved in August, just days before ceasefire talks were set to resume. The package includes fighter jets and advanced air-to-air missiles.

"A compendium of the best reporting and commentary surrounding the pivotal 2024 #elections in the #UnitedStates. You won't find horse race coverage here, or the standard "both sides" BS that passes so often for #political #journalism. What you will find are links, with brief commentary, to work that I believe advances the conversation we should be having about America's – and the world's – future."

A new report by Oxfam has revealed that more women and children have been killed in Gaza by the Israeli military over the past year than in any other conflict over the past two decades.

More than 6,000 women and 11,000 children have been killed in Gaza over the past 12 months, prompting urgent demands for an immediate and permanent ceasefire as violence escalates in Lebanon and the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

"the average new American car now weighs around 30 percent more than it did 40 years ago" ... I fear that one reason for that might be that the average American now also weighs 30 % more than they did 40 years ago, which - in turn - might again be due to the average American meal has also increased by a similar amount.

The problem is, of course, not limited to U.S. but definitely more prominent there.

Somebody, please take away my credit card before @mwl releases another book!

I use emacs since I discover Unix (some times ago on SunOS) but I taught ed (and vi) to a big load of students until 3 years ago. Now we teach nano :-/

Reading this book was a great joy (and ensuring me I was not teaching too much crap all those years before).

I even recommended the book to my students but I am not sure they enjoyed the reading as much as me ;-)

Probably because they were reading on a glass teletype instead of a proper one. :flan_wink:

12 Artists Who Were Masters of Drawing, From Leonardo da Vinci to Pablo Picasso

Drawing is one of the oldest forms of visual art with a long & diverse history. It is widely considered the foundation of all art & the first medium students must master. And while its widespread accessibility means it continues to be a popular pursuit for creatives around the world, drawings are often overshadowed by painting & sculpture

Eight Israeli soldiers have been killed in combat with Hezbollah in south Lebanon, the Israeli military said in a statement.

Three of those killed are commanders, and seven other soldiers are critically wounded.

Hezbollah clashed with Israeli troops infiltrating the southern Lebanese border town of Maroun al-Ras.

The group destroyed three Israeli Merkava tanks with guided missiles as they approached near the town, it said in a statement.

Watching J. Parish's summary of "1-on-1 basketball" youtube.com/watch?v=ZNL2_Wdm03…

Something's fascinating me:

- The game was originally released as "Dr. J vs Larry Bird", with each character tuned to their real-life on-court strengths
- But then Dr. J retired, so they replaced Dr. J with Jordan— but it's not a spriteswap, they did a third tuning designed on Jordan—

What would you get if you romhacked "1-on-1" (for C64, I guess?) to let Dr. J play against Jordan? Would an interesting matchup result?

in reply to mcc

I would expect that they designed Dr. J's and Jordan's attributes to balance against Bird's. So would that be transitive? It's such an interesting thought.

Related: I love how in the original Dr. J vs. Larry Bird game, you could break the backboard with a dunk and have the janitor cuss at you youtu.be/TEW--9yG6S0?si=DSjuZ0…
