I think I just vaulted over the line between "WordPress is too much of a maintenance burden, I want to move away" to "I need to stop using WordPress. Now."
Everybody is talking about packing the Supreme Court, but what about also regulating it, as the Constitution provides? Senator Ron Wyden has a solution…

turns out that “good guys with guns” aren’t actually a thing stopping “bad guys with guns” at all, after all. Surprise!
It’s very hard to fix a society when it reaches a state of being so utterly broken.
Trump didn’t send Putin COVID tests.
Trump sent Putin Abbott test MACHINES!
This, while Americans:
- Lacked adequate testing
- Had no vaccine
- Faced a crumbling healthcare infrastructure
- Watched as the Trump administration intercepted state-purchased COVID care

I think it’s important that this be shared as widely as possible so that, in the future it will be harder to say, as so many did post-Holocaust, “but we didn’t know”.
I agree that the information in the article is important and should be as widely available as possible.
Unfortunately, the NY Times paywall is preventing this. Here's a link that does a reasonable job in removing that restriction and making the article available to anyone, anywhere, with a web browser.
I worked as a trauma surgeon in Gaza from March 25 to April 8. I’ve volunteered in Ukraine and Haiti, and I grew up in Flint, Mich. I’ve seen violence and worked in conflict zones. But of the many things that stood out about working in a hospital in Gaza, one got to me: Nearly every day I was there, I saw a new young child who had been shot in the head or the chest, virtually all of whom went on to die. Thirteen in total.

@HeyReferee @caspercdn I can't count the number of times I've had to correct this, and I knew George Carlin, loved him dearly, but he's wrong.

in reply to Alex Zandra • • •@zandra not directly, but to some degree because self-hosted wordpress still engages with wordpress.org for things like spam blocking and plugins.
However, if you are self hosted, you are not using WP Engine. So you are not on Matt Mullenweg's Enemies List.

They never sent me an e-mail when I tried to sign up so I assumed they had disabled new signups or something like that (IIRC; I haven't tried again since).
Sorry to potentially be bearing bad news.

in reply to mcc • • •Yeah it totally sucks since SimpleNote is the one product that they haven't truly enshittified yet but I feel it will be at some point the way it's going.
If you haven't tried it yet, I do like and have used Joplin a lot more. I sync it with my Nextcloud instance and it's cross platform plus it works so well.

404media.co/wordpress-checkbox…
and I hit this kinda jawdropper of, sorry to link the bad place, a tweet:
twitter.com/JavierCasares/stat…
Where someone describes being banned from wordpress.org for asking questions about the "affiliated with WP Engine" checkbox. Note that's a thread, which neither the 404media post nor probably the Twitter website will show you, and there are followups beyond that one screenshot. I assure you they were reasonable and calmly stated

in reply to Batichi • • •@batichi If I had such an alternative, I would already be using it. :(
The two things I am currently looking at are:
- ClassicPress— fork of an older version of WordPress— since I have limited feature needs, may be attractive for less churn and less dependence on the wordpress company (?)
- Ghost— I know nothing about this— I just know everyone's recommending it

ClassicPress looks promising but I don't follow the PHP development scene well enough to know whether to recommend it, how practical it is to port plugins, other issues?
They claim their codebase is 1/2 the size of current WordPress

I mean, I haven't used a single WordPress feature intentionally since 2016. My experience with WP is every couple years I have to upgrade WordPress for security reasons, and the upgrade is a big hassle, and I'm unhappy with the changes.
So if this is just "Wordpress, but old, but with security patches", that's great, as "Wordpress, but old" is what I'd prefer, and maybe it'll even be more compatible with my theme

The things I make use of wordpress dot org for are:
- Akismet (essential)
- I install and upgrade versions/plugins using the wp-cli frontend, which uses the names and versions in the plugin repo (nice to have)
