Hurricane-related costs have become colossal for those in at-risk areas, and many residents are struggling to manage
The aftermath of Hurricane Helene and the approaching Hurricane Milton in the US south-east has left residents once again scrambling for ways to fortify their homes or, in extreme cases, to find sanctuary elsewhere. But the cost of doing so is burdensome at best and devastating at worst.

A pro-business faction (one of whose members is currently running for mayor) tried bringing an LNG plant to Mare Island, making the usual promises that it would bring jobs and moneymoneymoney to the city. Never mind that post-9/11 security measures would mean shutting down the entire SF Bay while LNG tankers made the transit from Mare to the Golden Gate. Never mind that any accident or terrorist incident might have a 7-10 mile blast radius (i.e. goodbye to the whole city). Voters turned them down.

The same faction has advocated paving over the marina green to build a hotel/mall, building a casino on MI, building a 24/7 cement plant that would make the AQI skyrocket, etc.

But, somehow, that the California Forever 'East Solano Project' completely ignored any kind of investment or development in Vallejo - the population favors blue collar jobs and not whitey techbro types - flew right over their heads.

I had the good fortune to know and work with Kristy Roschke for over a decade at Arizona State's Cronkite journalism school. She was an exemplary student who became a friend and colleague. She is an extraordinary talent -- a leader who gets things done with deep knowledge, vision, drive, and empathy.

She's just been named the inaugural executive director of the McGee Applied Research Center for Narrative Studies at Vanderbilt University. This is a great move for both.

Back then immigrants represented captive labor for the White wealthy so called "Christian" aristocracy.

Now we don't need immigrants. Gross wealth inequality, corrupt, fascist, federal government (IMO), guarantees that all 300+ million non-wealthy Americans are captive labor.

Duh. Immigration, economy, abortion, guns. Most repeated words in politics. Trigger words.

But yeah, the trump crowd stokes these fires relentlessly. Glad to see an article that puts things into perspective.

And what do they think when an even more genocidal and racist candidate beats the "lesser evil"?
in reply to LPS

Would you mind 'spelling it out', @**joe braun? Who are you referring to by 'they'? And who, praytell, is 'more' genocidal and racist; not in theory or speculation or Saturday-B-Movie-Drive-in scripting horror-fantasy, but in reality?

I've received a refurbished #pixel3a ...

I have installed #postmarketos / #sxmo on it and it "mostly works" even with no device profile

I now need to figure out how to tweak callaudio to make calls ... it works on gnome mobile, but on sxmo, it fails to switch to "call mode" ... on pavucontrol I only see a "Voice calls" profile (same on gnome mobile but works there)

I should have some time next week to try and figure out, but by then, if someone has an idea, they are welcome ;)

in reply to fdlamotte

If I compare #pixel3a with #oneplus6 on #sxmo

#op6 has gps, status led, tristate button and better cpu
#p3a has better sound in calls, cameras starting to work, no notch, smaller size

Two very good phones to use on #linuxmobile

I won't have much time to play this weekend, but I've kept my sim in the #pixel3a for now ;)
