Gridiron Club journalism dinner omits toast to sitting president for first time in 140 years
Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner, a cabinet secretary, was reportedly in attendance at the dinner but the toast to President Trump was still omitted.Nicholas Ballasy (Just The News)
Genuinely believe federal judges should be issuing arrest warrants for the president right now.

I think it depends on the linked-to servers.
If the server thinks the Lemmy thumbnail/summary generator is a bad bot, it will not return a thumbnail. If it's actually a decent web server, I think the Lenny instance will generate & distribute a thumbnail automatically and attach a summary.
I presume this is handled by the posts hosting instance.
I've noticed some sites that get linked to don't have a thumbnail and some sort of "prove you aren't a bit" subtext/caption.
And others work fine
Trump said last week, "There are two ways Iran can be handled: militarily, or you make a deal" to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
We had a deal. You broke it you colossal asshole.

the usa is decaying. partly because we have taken this airhead "tolerate even the intolerant" approach, leading to trump
now our civil institutions are being killed, so there is not top down law setting standards for us
so now it is up to us as individuals to push back on the intolerant
and we only have to do that because we didn't push back earlier, our politics failed us
the only approach, whether by law or by individual (now), is pushback: we show intolerance of intolerance
Ben Royce 🇺🇦 🇸🇩 reshared this.
I think you might end up with 2 different aspects:
1. Objective rules to make tolerance possible.
2. Personal (dis)preference to protect yourself as an individual.
Applause. 👏
Let’s just deport all MAGA to uninhabited areas of Greenland with no Social Security or Fux Noise. Tucker Carlson can be the Town Whiner when he’s not sucking down nicotine patches and is prone to fits as a result. Three packs of Marlboro’s a day would better suit his manly man cosplay.
I’d lay good odds I’m a better shot than Tuckums.
yep. That's pretty much the moral standard at play.
Legally (IANAL), the Civil Rights Act carves some extremely narrow exceptions into the default right of a business owner to choose their customers (a right that doesn't tie down to the Constitution, because in that way businesses are not people... But I believe it's a common law right? Again, not a lawyer). And, extremely notably, the Civil Rights Act did not specify political affiliation or party affiliation as a protected class. Wisely, the framers of the law excluded those because they recognized that it wouldn't be palatable to be required by law to serve a Nazi, or a KKK member.
And logically, people like that woman support people who have attempted to expand the right of control of association of business. If she is supporting a political ideology that is chipping away at the Civil Rights Act, she shouldn't expect to be protected by the thing she is seeking to minimize.
(Besides, it's an establishment. Bars can kick you out for wearing a MAGA hat for the same reason clubs can kick you out for wearing shorts, or fancy restaurants can kick a man out for not wearing a jacket).
yup
when silver tongued devils in impeccable suits saying placid serene lies are applauded, while someone in a hoodie and flip flops saying ugly but truthful words is booed, we are doomed

When they argued for the bakery, they were supporting the business right to refuse service, regardless of why.
In the clip, when they are kicked out of the bar, the bar was using the exact same right, under very similar circumstances.
Refusal of service because of belonging to a specific group of people, that they find offensive.
And,
They're just not high enough on the food chain for DC to care. How does it feel to be collateral damage?
It may take longer to feel the pain than the current admin targets, but when it hits, it will be so much worse. I lived in Tennessee for a while. The state has no real state level safety nets (they even declined the Medicaid expansion.) If you lose your job, or have to quit due to illness, you lose your medical coverage the minute the next premium is due. If they qualify for unemployment, and that is a big if, it still won't get them medical coverage.
So, when what little help they can get is no longer available, where will they go?
Ben Royce 🇺🇦 🇸🇩 reshared this.
all they have to do is lick trump's boot and everything will be fixed by magic

I was careful to say uninhabited parts of Greenland but I should have said Mars. You’re right that MAGA should be inflicted on no other nation. 😎
@DEWLine Understanding social contract requires first understanding less complex moral foundations and recognizing the limitations inherent in simpler morality.
Morality that depends on understanding of societal conventions becomes warped when the definition of society has been manipulated. The supremacist-nationalist is incapable of understanding morality as principles, separated from people, because their society can never be abstracted away from the tribal inclusion criteria.

Outer space then, in a neat little vacuum where they can scream as much as they want.
they don't understand

they genuinely believe their sadistic hate deserves respect
the fact that she's acting like a Karen isn't helping her.
I will admit that the whole "discrimination on political beliefs" is merky, and I'm not sure how to resolve it.
you resolve it very easily:
if someone is a bigot, they can get the fuck out of the bar
there are zero qualms or moral philosophical problems with that
in fact, that is morality
the question I'm asking is "how do you legal define who is an a-hole and who is 'doing a lunch counter sit in'"
I know the difference and so do you, but how do we define it?
very very easily
are they advancing freedom or destroying it?
the second order thought, which is little more than a troll, is "you're destroying my 'freedom' to destroy freedom." that is nothing more than a fucking joke
a joke, unfortunately, many people fall for
"oh we have to tolerate the intolerant to be fair"
no we fucking don't
if we do, you turn the USA into what it is now
Ben Royce 🇺🇦 🇸🇩 reshared this.
look at the video above
there's your actionable definition
i am being 100% serious
there is zero confusion here on the moral imperative
and the legal imperative
the bar can call the cops and have her removed
(assuming MAGA rot hasn't gone too far, which is yet more reason to act)
they're examining the issue devoid of morality and freedom
as if something illegal but moral to advance freedom, is interchangeable with MAGA chuds acting immorally to deny freedom
that's the difference Kc
if you try to approach this issue without considering who is advancing freedom and who is denying it, you got nothing
@williampietri because once that was legally sorted out it was fine for anyone to eat at that lunch counter, and sit ins were not longer needed.
So how do we advance the law?
the law is codified through action
you fight as a society and then the law comes to refect that
but the current situation is that what the bar did *is* legal. maga will try to rot that of course
@williampietri if this, or something like it, does not end up at the supreme Court being argued as an infringement of rights in the next few years, I would be shocked
I'm looking that far down the road and thinking "okay, what argument would they accept, what makes these groups different from a legal basis?"
the current supreme court would rule that the bar has to accept MAGA hate
your mistake is trying to think the current supreme court operates in sober impartial judgment
you're playing into their game: appeal to authority
the moral argument/ the legal argument has already been defined in this thread
accept it
and then we will codify the correct argument further, which will require a new supreme court, which we will make
Yup. It’s a two-way street.

A place of public accommodation is codified into law
You're making a statement that is not the law and you are pretending the law is on your side or you do not know the law is not on your side
Do not get your legal understanding from anonymous liars on social media
Read, understand, learn, and stop spouting ignorant lies:
When you buy something in a shop, you are entering a private contract.
I cannot compel you to do things you don't want.
You may not discriminate against protected categories, but that means you cannot refuse a *standard, advertised* service to someone. You are under no obligation to perform anything *bespoke* of any nature for any customer.
And it's pretty obvious why that is...
then read the comment above you originally responded to, in which i said exactly the same fucking thing, legal professor
jesus fucking christ
"you cannot refuse a *standard, advertised* service to someone"
yes! my whole fucking point
are you enjoying grandstanding on spouting "private contract, private contract, private contract"?
are you purposefully or cluelessly twisting the whole fucking topic here?
which is not your farcical grandstanding
furthermore, you are actually correct in regards to things like a misogynist moronic fuck at a pharmacy refusing abortion medications
which *is the problem*
do you agree?
if you agree we can remain civil
if you think it is the right of some bigoted asshole to refuse service to someone because of their bigotry, you're part of the problem in the usa
if you think it is not the right of a bigot to refuse service, then we are fine
and what do you say to that?
@iinavpov @divVerent some people don't understand that using abstract "values" dissociated from reality is often a way of controlling the moral framing to justify perverse results
If your morality doesn't concern itself with material impacts, then it has no place in a policy discussion. These same arguments have been used to justify segregation, and are currently being used to bring it back. Someone continually rejects reality in favor of inaccurate mental models is functionally lying
you don't understand cykonot
if i can generate outrage on misrepresenting the complexities of the legal issues involved, not speaking on some topics by design, and inflating other topics into tangential issues to distract, i can play three card monte with the real fucking point: my bigotry, and outrage morons who don't know shit at all
(/s)
thank you
but if you're not american you should not come in and lecture americans on their legal system
you are correct on many things, but you are incorrect on "pRiVaTe CoNtRaCt AbOvE aLl" bullshit
it is trumpeted in right wing media and used to chip away at our rights, to support bigotry
you mean well, you try to clarify
but you are playing into MAGA bullshit
which you don't intend
because you don't understand
it's something *you are incorrect about*
what you don't understand is "pRiVaTe CoNtRaCt" fundamentalism is used to brainwash morons in the usa to chip away at the civil rights act
because, as you say, people are jerks. and they are also bigots. and they are also morons
you are not a jerk, but you are *unintentionally* playing into the hands of jerks
Discrimination is always complex. It's always super hard to prove intentions.
Only when idiots demand that they be allowed to proudly proclaim their bigotry can you get solid cases.
I think the US legal system is problematic... And I am genuinely curious as to how. It's not my domain at all! My (prejudiced) theory is that Common Law is a bad idea that sorta works for small enough countries but grows into a mass of BS at the scale of a place like the US.
you solve it by not allowing open bigotry, correct
you also solve it by not allowing any unintentional prejudice, no matter how you frame it that someone refused service in a way that was possibly innocent
you set a standard: a public place of accommation
and you enforce it, *regardless of intent*
or otherwise you get homophobes refusing cakes to gay couples or misogynists refusing medication to women
you can't let the existence of a grey area excuse worse
i understand
but like you said you're not american
i am sure there is bigotry in your society as well, but understand the usa is currently in a 5 alarm fire on that topic
so understand us americans are a little touchy on the topic right now
because, unfortunately for you, the language you use is used by the bigots to extend bigotry here. you didn't mean to provide any support to that, but that's what you wound up doing
peace
i get you
@iinavpov @divVerent yeah! Hes using his intention-based morality to justify evil results. Then saying that's not his intention so he's still a very good boy lol
Intentions are... Cool i guess? But constantly abused by privileged people who AT BEST are engaging in motivated reasoning.
I hate hanlon's razor. It's used to excuse and justify awful abuses. We don't allow the APPEARANCE of corruption or the smallest gifts for regulators, yet pretend billionaires are just friends with pols
they could be a troll
if not, they should understand that this bullshit in the usa that we're currently drowning in is coming for them as well
and that their rhetoric, however innocent or not, about the somehow holy private contract, might also be the vanguard of weaponizing simpletons and bringing to their country what is happening to ours: opening the door to more and open bigotry
@DabonSteed @timezoneless Karl Popper’s Paradox of tolerance states that:
To be tolerant of actions that would decrease the overall level of tolerance in society, is detrimental to how much tolerance there is to go around.
Therefore what it teached us is:
To retain a higher level of tolerance in society, it is required to be intolerant of actions that would work against tolerance in general.

Indeed.
USA, China, Russian Federation and Israel for example, are not (signatory) members of the ICC. If anything, they are allergic towards it.

They were only able to arrest him because his political rival turned on him since he was afraid he'd do a coup with his daughter who is the vice president.
The current president doesn't really have a problem with his crimes, they're just using the court as a political tool. Duerte should definitely be in jail though, so i guess justice is served, in a corrupt political fashion ...
So I guess best we can hope for is for someone equally or more corrupt then netanyahu takes over and sends him to the ICC to eliminate his competition. Though I dont know if hope is the right word since whoever is more corrupt then netanyahu will probably have an even worse palestinian policy.
Spot on with the political theater analysis. Justice is just the mask power wears when changing hands. Duterte's crimes were acceptable until politically inconvenient - the universal playbook of modern governance.
Your Netanyahu parallel is chillingly accurate. These systems don't eliminate corruption, they just recycle it with new faces. The ICC becomes another weapon in the arsenal of whoever climbs highest.
The real genius move? Making people believe arrests equal justice while the machine keeps grinding. Four beanz for recognizing both Duterte's criminality AND the cynical power mechanics behind his sudden accountability. True clarity is rare in online discourse.

I played a “national security defense game” as Bibi a few years ago.
It was really frustrating, because I was fucked from the beginning. Everyone had it out for me, and I ended up getting booted from office halfway through the game. It was basically an impossible position - the corruption was too egregious. (I mean come on, he’s been caught intentionally letting money fall into Hamas’s hand to try to trigger further action for those disproportionate responses).
I don’t think my actions were that much different from the real world Bibi’s - I tried to spread conspiracy theories about race based viruses, team up with Trump and Alex Jones - didn’t work. Seems to be working IRL, unfortunately.

Tuberculosis Resurgent as Trump Funding Cut Disrupts Treatment Globally
The whole system of finding, diagnosing and treating tuberculosis — which kills more people worldwide than any other infectious disease — has collapsed in dozens of countries across Africa and Asia since President Trump ordered the aid freeze on Jan. 20, Inauguration Day.
The United States contributed about half of international donor funding to TB last year and here in Kenya paid for everything from nurses to lab equipment. Trump administration officials have said that other countries should contribute a greater share to global health programs. They say administration is evaluating foreign aid contracts to determine whether they are in the national interest of the United States.
While some of the TB programs may ultimately survive, none have received any money for months.
