I think after we've been shopping this morning I might retire my old Raspberry Pi 2 that has been running as a NUT ( Network UPS Tools ) server for years and setup NUT on my new #OPNsense router instead. Then I'll look into setting up Collectd with MQTT again for displaying stuff on my #HomeAssistant server monitoring dashboard. It was previously setup on my old #OpenWRT router.

I love me some Collectd and MQTT. I haven't got a home assistant server though. (nor, in fact, NUT, anywhere, yet.) I decided Graphite and Grafana were too big and that I wanted to cobble up some graph thing that #Emacs eww or Dillo could browse. But right now I'm trying to replace #OpenWRT with some #FreeBSD jails. OPNsense would make more, um, sense, but I feel zany!

I ditched plans to use collectd and mqtt for router metrics as I used them before on OpenWRT. Now I'm using an integration for OPNsense that provides 100+ entities about my OPNsense router and it's fantastic. See my other toots for the link.

Great letter in the Guardian this morning pointing out, that its not disabled people not wanting to work that is the major problem, its employers being unwilling to employ them that is a more serious impediment for those with health issues who wish to get back into work....

But of course, as always a political class that would rather work with economic models of individuals than look at what's really happening in the world, often misses this simple point!

There is no doubt that the disability benefits system is broken – but not in the ways the government suggests (Editorial, 18 March). The current system is hostile, inefficient and difficult to navigate – often worsening the physical and mental health of claimants, through energy-depleting assessment and appeal processes, gaslighting and having to fight to be seen.

The government suggests that the way to get disabled people into work is to invest more in job coaches – as though the disabled community simply lack confidence to hunt for jobs. In reality, it is employers who lack confidence to take us on. To find one that can offer minimal hours (for someone with long Covid) or provide multiple sick days a month (for regular hospital visits) is almost impossible.

If the government is serious about improving access to work for the disabled community, this is where investment needs to happen. We need something like the apprenticeship scheme, whereby employers would receive financial support to employ people with limited capacity for work – providing us with a fair living wage on reduced hours. This could unlock the talents of the educated and brilliant disabled community.

I think that discussion of work and disability and benefits is a red herring. The issue is not the number of people on some form of income support because of disability. The issue is the cost of rent. The benefits bill, including disability benefits, is so high because rent is so high and housing costs are including in the numbers being bandied around. Benefits are a massive subsidy to landlords.

If this government was serious about reducing the benefit bill it would bring in measures to prevent rent seeking. The obvious would be the end of assured short term tenancies. More subtle would be enhancing renters rights and beefing up enforcement, both with more inspectors and massive penalties for infringements. Even just paying for the enforcement of existing regulation would be a better use of money than job coaches. None of this will happen, as Reeves' only vision for 'growth' is further inflating the property bubble

As a deaf mum of twins it took me years to get back into the workplace…it was a local council with a policy that offered anyone with a disability who met the essential criteria an interview, that eventually got me back into a regular PAYE job. Until then, I picked up crumbs of work on a self employed basis. Many of us who are disabled resort to working for ourselves, because employers won’t give us a chance…but it’s a very precarious existence.

if work was less toxic people with MH issues might not be economically inactive and there wouldn't have been such a staff exodus from the NHS.

Employers incorrectly assume there is a significant cost to providing accommodations. It doesn't have to be that way.

It's a tough mindset to change. Any amount of DEI (often an excuse rather than a solution) won't fix it - inclusivity and access needs to be at the heart of everything an organisation (and everyone within it) does.

Yes, I'd completely agree; toxic workplaces are not natural they are made by toxic management & by ill considered work practices/environments - I saw this at my own erstwhile University. to encourage people back to work, work needs to be better.... its a simple but often disregarded argument

This aligns with the #DEI discussion. If you live long enough, you will become disabled.

Most #disabled people can work. As a #country, the #US (being a hotbed of #capitalism), believes that it's better for disabled folks to be #taxpayers than #tax burdens. This goes along with the idea that you "earn" a living by being employed. There are many programs available to upskill disabled folks, and not all are #government-funded.

That said, many employers are under the misguided impression that disabled people want jobs they are not qualified for. And that hiring a disabled person is an act of charity.

soooo enafore developed a nasty bug that only happens on the stable version of firefox (github.com/enafore/enafore/iss…) and that's accelerated my move to try out librewolf: librewolf.net/

the one thing that really sucks about librewolf is that the default settings wipe out all your history every time you close the browser... because privacy? anyway, first thing you want to do is go into settings and turn that shit off

once you've done that it's pretty great; it comes with ublock origin built-in, so the only extension you really have to install manually is consent-o-matic: addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firef…
