We need an updated Land Of Confusion video, complete with Spitting Image puppets of all the key players. If you’re too young, here’s the original:
> part of the video should *mock* people who use “algorithmic video generators.”
That would be appropriately meta is the video was algorithmically produced. To do it the old-fashioned way would easily cost a few million dollars. Apparently each one of the puppets in the original cost $10,000 to make.

Shifting Sand, Seditious Turnip
in reply to afreytes, 👻 of 🎄⌛ • • •how recent is recent?
Mushishi is 2008, also seinen, really interesting focus on sociology and psychology but told through an animist lens where the protagonist is a mix of a doctor and a priest. Really interesting sci-fantasy as well how there's worldbuilding around the science of the magic creatures in the setting. Within the limitations of a 24 minute episode, it's fairly meditative and focuses a lot of natural beauty. My fav episode deals with a dad who develops bipolar and has manic episodes, except in the setting he gets infected by a rainbow, so the whole story is about how beautiful the rain is and also what it's like growing up with a stigmatised family member. Before my diagnosis I had no idea why I loved it so much!
Parasyte, 2014. Maybe not so unconventional, but extremely well-written, Wikipedia tells me it has professors recommending it. Covers diverse topics as environmentalism, racism, ethnogenesis, state repression, and is overall very philosophical as all the characters will debate with one another or offer diverse viewpoints on the events unfolding a

Kaiba, also 2008. Masaaki Yuasa, of Ping Pong and Devilman Crybaby. I haven't finished it yet, but it's Masaaki Yuasa, so if you're an Animation Enjoyer you should absolutely watch it.
Concrete Revolutio, 2015. The most interesting anime I've ever watched, it's so filler-free it felt like information overload trying to keep up with all the new ideas and characters. Gorgeous animation too. Interesting eclectic visual style. Wasn't too thematically approachable to me as it's very steeped in 60's Japanese politics and history, which I'm ignorant about, but the character drama and raw information density still appealed to me.
I think in general, you'd like things that were curated for noitaminA, as it generally appeals to people who feel a bit cold about the conventions and recurring elements in stuff marketed at teenage boys.

in reply to Shifting Sand, Seditious Turnip • • •I've seen a fair bit of older anime, the "recent" is so people dont knee-jerk reply something popular like Wolf's Rain (which is excellent but I already seen it) or Death Note (same as previous). I did see Parasyte which I loved. But will check the rest of your suggestions. Thanks!
PS: I dont hate shonen anime I love MHA, and saw the one about spirits and aliens but theres so many and ive seen so much that the tropes drag me down.

@sandriver After seeing Concrete Revolutio's trailer it shot to the top of the queue... This might be too obscure but it totally reminded me of a fighting game called Tech Romanzer and I hope the anime borrows even a tiny a tiny bit of inspiration from the game which itself is like a meta homage to mechs in anime.
