Anna Gross (FT) suggests political leaders need to stop talking about 'growth' as a policy aim unless they are clear about what growth should deliver to voters:
'So what should economic growth facilitate? Lower unemployment, more affordable goods & services, reduced poverty, more money for the government to spend on public services such as healthcare and education, to name a few'!
Celebrating rises in GDP, when the above is not happenings just confirms politicians are out of touch!

"US customers will have to pay more for the essentials, and foreign suppliers will seek other markets elsewhere. Sourcing these goods and services at home will be very costly – there’s a reason why they were outsourced in the first place – and will take decades."

I'm very surprised to see Gordon say this. They were outsourced to take advantage of cheaper labour in countries with weak worker protections and break the labour movement at home.

But it doesn't follow - as neoliberals like to claim and Campbell seems to be echoing them - that even targeted use of tariffs, with legitimate supply security and sovereignty goals, will always raise prices for citizens and so on. The tariffs kept under the Biden Administration suggest otherwise.
Tariffs are *not* a MAGA invention.

Reagan, the Great Communicator, makes a very good case against the use of tariffs in developed economies. Yet it is truly weird to see Reagan’s speech being circulated on X by the Chinese ... All part of China’s attempt to portray itself as the new and best champion of a multilateral trading system ..."

in reply to Strypey • • •A Reagan speech, being circulated by the CCP, that Campbell (weirdly) seems to be taking at face value.
Part of a package of neocon propaganda that ignored the economic success of targeted tariffs in mixed economy countries, including the post-WW2 US. That claimed forcing countries to accept any imports and asset stripping ("investment") from anywhere, an obvious wealth extraction con, was a strategy for promoting "economic growth" in the asset stripped country.

> US workers who will be taking all these amazing new jobs inevitably demand the wages and conditions you can avoid with 3rd world exploitation
I'd hope so. But given the weakness of the US trade unions compared to the 1970s, and the wages and conditions scAmazon get away with, there's no guarantee they will get them.
> The companies that are willing to exploit anything that isn't nailed down certainly aren't going reduce their profit margins
Or pay more than they're forced to.

Fortunately these aren't the only options for relocalising production.
It's starting to look like Orange Stalin is burping out policy at random, rather than fronting for a new industrial policy planned by the oligarchy. Which means everyone will be scrambling to figure out how to produce stuff locally, *except* the companies that have already been doing it for ethical reasons. People like organic farmers, or;
