US employers added just 73,000 #jobs last month as #labor market weakens in face of #Trump #trade wars

US employers added just 73k jobs last month & #Labor Dept revisions showed that hiring was much weaker than previously reported in May & June. The #unemployment rate ticked up to 4.2%.

The unexpectedly weak report raises questions about the health of the job market & the #economy as #Trump pushes forward with a radical & erratic overhaul of American #trade #policy, imposing hefty #tariffs on imports from almost every country on earth.

The #unemployment rate ticked up to 4.2% last month from 4.1% in June. The number of people in the #labor force – those working & looking for work – fell modestly last month, & the ranks of the unemployed rose by 221,000.

Manufacturers cut 11,000 #jobs last month after shedding 15,000 in June & 11,000 in May. The #FederalGovernment, where #employment has been targeted by the #Trump admin, lost 12,000 jobs. Jobs in administration & support fell by nearly 20,000.

Healthcare companies added 55,400 jobs last month – accounting for 76% of the jobs added in July & offering another sign that recent job gains have been narrowly concentrated.

The #StockMarket tumbled on the news.

The current situation is a sharp reversal from the hiring boom of just 3 years ago when desperate employers were handing out signing bonuses & introducing perks such as Fridays off, fertility benefits & even pet insurance to recruit & keep workers.

Weighing on the #labor market are the lingering effects of higher #InterestRates that were used by the #FederalReserve to fight #inflation; Trump’s massive import taxes & the costs & uncertainty they are imposing on businesses; & an anticipated drop in foreign #workers as Trump’s massive #deportation plans move forward.

The rate of people quitting their #jobs — a sign they’re confident they can land something better — has fallen from the record heights of 2021 & 2022 & is now below where it stood before the pandemic.

I lost my job without warning about 2.5 months ago. I've been applying to every single job in my industry that I'm qualified for that's been posted within a 70 mile radius and I've had a single interview so far. Some weeks I've not been able to find any new jobs to apply for! This job market *sucks*

Fortunately one of my old workplaces brought me back part time as a contractor and they've been handing me more and more work so I've been ramping up my hours there over the past two months and I'm finally up to an amount of hours where I can coast for a while and maybe actually splurge some too. No benefits and I'll be the first to go if they decide that they need to shed labor again, but it could be a lot worse!

in reply to Nonilex

the workers and the working class were accumulating too much power. That is an easy fix. Make them need their job to survive. Raise the survival bar.
in reply to Nonilex

you know their solution is going to be to stop tracking job growth.

ONLY 73,000 jobs were created last month, lower than expectations and a sign of a slowing US economy under the Trump regime.

And the crap's about to really hit the fan with prices. Retailers bought excess stock in the hope the madness would stop, but that's run out. Trump, incredibly, has been yelling at corporations to eat the cost and not raise prices, but of course that's not going to happen.

AND he just did the ballroom thing AND he doesn't want to allow elections. This is a recipe for mass unrest, and the military already made it clear they won't shoot us for this guy.

I tried to post this on ask reddit but, i was filtered. no chance.

I have spoken against genocide on reddit before and received site wide bans for speaking my mind.

I got banned from /r/Palestine for calling out pro-Trump obvious foreign election interference. As in, brand new accounts during the 2024 campaign that posted dozens of pro-Trump articles to /r/Palestine with no other site activity.

I had a fourteen-year history of posting in support of Palestinian liberation and against the occupation and genocide.

Funnily enough, I also got banned from /r/politics for a pro-Palestine comment.

What I take from all this is that reddit is a shithole and not worth getting worked up over. Fuck that site and all the astroturfing pro-genocide monsters on world news and the rest of it.

Truly a fantastic source of "news" coming from the self proclaimed "entertainment" channel and certainly not to be mistaken as news channel (as they have said about themselves).

As it's been decreed: delete fox "news" from your parents TV.

A news article in 2022 stated that around one hundred thousand new original songs are uploaded to streaming services every single day.

Every single day.

I wrote Digital Busker with this in mind, for the artists trying to find their audience, competing against a torrential flood of competitors.

This one is for my fellow songwriters and musicians.

I'm blown away by just *how much* engagement, or just plain giving, I'm always seeing from you on here.
