All recent SoCs and GPUs have some sort of "AI accelerator" specialized block. I have two questions about these components.
1) Are AI accelerators actually a new addition to consumer chips, or are they a rebranding of an older component? The reason I ask is because in older Qualcomm SoCs, there is a component they call the "digital signal processor," using the brand-name Hexagon. In newer Snapdragon SoCs, the digital signal processor is gone, but suddenly there's a Hexagon-branded "Neural Processing Unit." Is the NPU actually just a renaming of the DSP?
2) Can AI accelerators be used for anything except AI? Can they be used in scientific computing, gaming, compression/decompression, or anything else I might actually want to use a computer for?

Watched the Newport Oregon city council meeting about ICE looking into a facility tonight. The council mostly refrains from responding to comments to help things go faster.
A girl spoke, she had her life blown up by ICE recently. She found great courage, and begged for grace.
She told her story. She was so very scared of talking there. She is scared more by what happened and fear of what more could happen.
She ran out of time before her story was finished, she'd been slowed from fighting sobs.
A city leader gently offered her more time to finish.
When she finished she was consoled by a city leader. He offered encouragement, kindness and commitment to try and help her and the community. It was a really beautifully raw moment watching that impact her. She was comforted, exhausted, and hugged tight when it was over. She'd been running on pure courage.
