I'm becoming more and more of the opinion that we should not worry about being "United" States. Blue states need to make arrangements among themselves to cooperate with each other, and let the red states take care of themselves.
We would at first have what happened between India and Pakistan when they split. People would rush to migrate one way or the other. The red states may want to get more violent, but they would lose a second time to the North. However, the North shouldn't take the territory. Leave the Red states to themselves. They would quickly discover that their well-being is attached to cooperating with the Blue states. We can then be open to re-connecting with states that are willing to respect human rights, and interact peacefully with Blue states.
It would be painful. But it is painful right now, and people are thinking they want to go back to how things were---which is what led us to this point in the first place!
