I mean what family hasn't been through the endless faff and disruption of a household renovation project only to find that it has eaten up the sharp end of four hundred mil of other people's money, and then realise that y'all preferred one of your other gaffs?
43 countries out of 195 (recognized) in the world live under a monarchy. That's 22% in 2026 which is disgusting. 43 countries have a king, a queen, an emperor, whatever they call themselves. It doesn't matter how much power they have, it's just wrong.
When English people learn about history in schools they do the Norman conquest, Tudors and Stuarts*, possibly the “Industrial Revolution” and then World War 1 and World War 2.
It struck me that learning about Tudors and Stuarts (actually they just learn about one Stuart: James I) without mentioning the fact that the second Stuart ended up getting beheaded in a revolution is crazy.
It’d be like learning about the reigns of the last of the Russian Tzars without mentioning the October Revolution. Or studying Louis XIV, XV etc without discussing how France was soon to be a republic.
I recognize the irreplaceable cultural contributions of those my own ancestors dispossessed and exploited — native Americans, people of African descent. And I refuse to whitewash or forget that dispossession and exploitation connected to my own history.
As someone who actually does descend from those folks and has umpteen ancestors who took part in the Revolution — in several cases, giving their llves — I have something to say in return to Donald Trump:
I refuse to define this multi-cultural nation by my white Anglo-Celtic roots. I welcome its broad diversity.
The man who married two immigrant wives? The man who would not qualify for membership in a lineage society like Sons of the American Revolution because he's descended from NONE of the glorious Britiish folks who brought "culture" to North America, in his telling of the story?
My response: Is the ludicrousness of a man whose mother was a Scottish Gaelic-speaking immigrant and grandfather a German immigrant babbling on about how "we" had a "culture," a noble English one, in North America two centuries before the Revolution going to pass unnoticed?
The man of recent immigrant roots whose regime is engaged in brutal attacks against immigrants?
