I kinda doubt they'll move past the hobbyist space. Mainly because I feel like they are just wasting resources.
There may be a place for hybrid solutions that let ypu seamelessly process files in the cloud, like for an IDE or a job that requires a controlled environment for allows personal devices. The issue is that you can just make an electron app that doesn't pretend to be a DE. IDK though, it could have its uses, but it still is kinda hard to justify.
Do you remember a little project 15~20 years ago called SymphonyOS? They had a desktop environment they called #Mezzo which was a bit more integrated than just a ""desktop"" looking thing in a browser.
There also used to be ""cloud desktops" or "cloud PCs" that would run on any lamp stack. They provided a very simple interface with most of the basic necessities. Good luck tryin to find one by searching the internet these days though.
