Final Bird Report. Well folks, I didn't post at the end of July because I was hoping to get more exciting birds, but I found through the midsummer, it's almost always the usual suspects! Our darling little friends the chickadees are always there summer and winter, as are the handsome corvids: magpie, blue jay, raven, crow. Around my yard and around Muskeg Creek in Athabasca, Alberta, I saw/heard robins, red-eyed vireos, three types of sparrow: white-throated, song, and house sparrow, hairy woodpecker, and nuthatch. At the Athabasca University garden there are swallow nestboxes and it was lovely to see them flying back and forth in July. On August 9th I went on a mushroom walk on a lovely property on Armstrong Lake (near Rochester) and saw red-necked grebes on the lake, lots of holes in trees made by woodpeckers and a downy woodpecker in action making one, and Canada geese on the road. I of course saw and heard other waterfowl - grebes, ducks, loons - while paddleboarding local lakes but not close enough to ID.
