What's a writing tool, piece of software, online service, etc. which you feel is *underappreciated*? Something that gives you a lot of value at some point during the writing or publishing process, but which deserves to be more widely known or used than you feel it is?

Hmm. I write in LibreOffice, but I think it's finally finding recognition as a tool.
I don't use a lot of advertising services, but of all I dared to try, Fussy Librarian does best for me.

Fussy Librarian not terribly expensive, and Jeffrey Bruner is very approachable and kind. If you ever think of buying an email promo, you can do worse than working with him.
I also love Atticus, my formatting software. Definitely recommend. One-time purchase, unlimited books. Good support. I use it for ebook and print interiors.
It's saving me hours per book, formatting by hand in LibreOffice was a pain, even with a template. This is so much better.

I will be very honest: I looked at Friendica and could not figure out how to use it. Couldn't even see how to get started.
I would love a decent group/forum replacement, but the main website is so incredibly unhelpful, I never bothered.

Is as easy as Mastodon. Make an account and post. As simple as that. This is how it looks when I reply to you:

Yeah, that looks familiar. I used to live on forums 20 years ago. I know bbcode and all that.
The trick always is to get people to interact on a forum.

I will give it a try, just not today (as my attention is on being the featured creature of the ScribesAndMakers hashtag). 🙂

I think many today have only known of these things, but the older amongst us remember the pain of clunkier means of putting text down, and can appreciate the benefits of the current technologies.

Oh, my goodness, yes.
Right now, I'm using a gamer keyboard (a Razor), I like the feel of it, and I actually like the clicking. (It's part mechanical.)
It's also backlit, and I love that, too.
Keyboards are so important to writers. I've been touch-typing for decades.
