Can someone tell me the best way to put a transparent "window" on an opaque plastic bottle, while retaining the bottle's ability to contain liquid without leaking?
Context: I am using a composting toilet (ok. it's a bucket) with a diverter for urine. Right now, I'm using a clear bottle. It isn't always easy to tell when it's nearly full, but it's possible.
I want to trade it out for a detergent bottle because of the drip-free spout. Its opacity is also a feature, so that no one has to see how gross it gets when I go outside to empty. It's also larger, which would reduce frequency of emptying.
The trouble is that there would be no way of knowing how full it is. I could buy an electronic scale to permanently set it on, but that solution seems overkill.
The simplest thing would be to have a window of transparent plastic near the top, so that I can see it's getting close, well before it overflows.
(Overflow is a realistic issue, and I know from experience how annoying it is to solve when it passes that point.)
I know how to cut holes in plastic. Easy.
But how could I place a layer of clear plastic (cut from another bottle) over the hole and seal it on well enough to be waterproof? Is this possible with the average tools I might have on hand?

A regular lighter might be all you need, but it might take a few bottles to get there. Avoid getting burns, too :)

having only one bottle is a serious limitation :( at least you can patch the holes with melting some PET and sealing the holes with it.
Oh, actually, what even am I talking about! I just remembered that my grandma used to use a very cheap waterproof glue for jobs like this one. But then the glue didn't last forever, only a few months due to the sun exposure, and that's probably a no go in this case...

Could you instead find a transparent bottle with similar properties, and just spray paint the outside, taping off the desired area to be left unpainted?
Silicone is an excellent sealant. You might be able to use that as glue. It wouldn’t sit flush against the bottle though, and would be difficult to keep clean.

@Trine_DK Hmm silicone glue might be the way. I tend to forget that there are, in fact, glues that are advertised to work on plastics. And I have no experience using them to know how well they work.
They really don't sell this style of detergent bottle (with the drip-free, easy pour caps) in transparent options within US stores.
I'll look into glues. Thanks!

In the days of Olde, they used a dipstick. Yup. A dipstick.
that becomes another problem though.
Cut a shallow rectangle up on the EMPTY detergent bottle, then using silicon (doesn't matter what color) and attach a wider piece of clear plastic over the cut. Make sure you don't skip any part - you want a good seal. 🤣
Let it cure.
But before you cut - some detergent bottles already have that built in. :)

@knowprose haha yeah if I'm gonna bend down to unscrew everything and put in a dipstick, I may as well empty it 😂
I'll look into silicone. And double-check that it doesn't already have one. (If it does, I'm not sure it'll be where I can see it well from that angle.)

You can still see how full it is up close but from distance no clue what is in there. I can empty it without a shame :D
