Operating a personal server should be as simple as operating a smartphone.
Security should be handled by other people. Updates should be handled by other people.
Things like domains/dns should be optionally handled automatically by the provider.
If I decide to move to a new provider, I should be able to migrate all my stuff, data, app settings, domains, etc, automatically and without any hassle; the new and old providers should have a mechanism for working together to ensure this happens.
Installing services should be as simple as browsing an app store.
Power users should be able to "sideload" new services that work with the platform; as well as assuming responsibility for updates/security if they want.
It's good to see things like yunohost and sandstorm(rip) adopting some of these ideas, and seeing services being adapted for these platforms; and hosting providers offering these platforms on their own hardware but we aren't quite there yet; close tho!
I want it to be so frictionless and so hard to fuck up that anyone, regardless of technical experience can pay like USD100/yr and have enough storage/compute/bandwidth to replace any personal cloud services they are currently using. Backups, office suite, blog, email if they want, integration with hone security cameras, etc
Being able to keep your data to yourself should not be a privilege of the tech savvy.
